Hi all, this is my first posting even though I've been lurking for a while!

Just got a query about the suspension on my C5, sometimes when I set off (accelerate) the back of the car is much lower compared to the front, but then after changing gears 1st -> 2nd -> 3rd it then rises up to the same level as the front. This only seems to happen in two situations; first is when I've been driving on the motorway, exited up the slip road, braked to a stop, and then accelerate away; the other time is when I've had to brake quite hard to stop for traffic lights.

Under other driving conditions - normal braking, accelerating from roundabouts/junctions etc. the suspension is fine, both front and rear are level.

Does anyone know what may be causing this, or is it a normal part of the 'hydractive' suspension? BTW the car is a 2002 2.2 HDi if this matters!

Stick your head under the bonnet and listen for the accumulator sphere ticking, if it is more than about every 15 seconds then it could be that it's flat.
I'm assuming that it is the same as the Xantia (I think the c5 is simpler)
Doesn't the C5 lower itself when at motorway speed, maybe you are fooling it with you sudden stopping??

Yup, the C5 ride height drops on the motorway, it's almost as if the front is rising first before the rear. This is my second C5, and I can't recall it doing this on the first one.

sorry to hear its playing up, but count yourself lucky you dont have a Rane Rover with Air Suspension they make Citroen suspension niggles seem like a walk in the park

Will probably just take it to the dealer and get them to check it out, I've got 3 months left on the warranty so best get it in now just in case. On top of that, some scrote has booted the back of the car so I've now got a lovely big dent in the boot lid - £200 to 'pop' the dent and respray the boot lid.

Just an update on this issue! Took the car in for MOT this week and it failed on rear brake disk corrosion. I thought that's strange, since I had new disks put on last year, turns out the rear calipers were also shot and thus there was no braking on the rear disks!! Anyway to cut a long story short, the rear disks and calipers have now been replaced and MOT passed - to the cost of £350!

Now the suspension is fine too, it doesn't 'drop' after braking. I think what was happening with the brakes only working on the front, the back of the car was rising as all the force was going to the front, thus the suspension was compensating for this, so when I set off again, the back of the car took a bit of time to rise back up.

Something to bear in mind for future. And before anyone comments why I never noticed the rear brakes not working for nearly a year - even with just the fronts working these brakes were damn powerful!!

These, like the xantia are prone to pads corroding into the calipers and also the caliper corroding very badly to the arm . On the xantia this makes the caliper twist on its mounting until it hits the disc .On the c5 it twists until it gets hit by the inside of the wheel.They are a barsteward to remove as citroen in their wisdom decided to fit the bolts to the caliper with some sort of bearing fit which means you can unbolt them but can't remove the bolts from the caliper ,making it a tt of a job>Best bet is to remove rear pads Every service ,copper slip and refit.

Thanks for the tip Mega, will bear that in mind next service. I did note the fitter swearing when removing the old calipers, and then coming into the office for plasters since he'd managed to slice the top of his hand!!

I don't care what anyone else says, I think the C5 is a fantastic car for the money and a great, comfortable mile-muncher. Armrest down, cruise on, CD on and then don't need to stop since the seats are so comfy and the tank gives me about 600 miles.

My callipers were the same on the rear of mine, And I'm still 100% sure the mechanic sheared the bolt removing it!

Have you seen the pics of the facelift C5, looks by far the best saloon coming out!
