The speedo/mileometer has been gone on the 172 for a little while now, after a period of working intermittently, so although I'd thought it was a little thirsty I hadn't been able to check on the trip computer.

But worked out the MPG I did to BT&P and back and it doesn't make good reading, OK we were going some on the Saturday (Lambo and Ford GT to chase) but I managed all of 22 and a bit MPG for the entire trip yikes

I know my RSport ECU will trade some MPG for BHP, but at this extent it strikes me that something might be wrong, I could get more from a gallon than this in my Cerb!

Are there any common issues on Clios or Renaults in general I should check out before opening myself up for a fleecing?

A shot oxygen sensor could ruin your mpg. Lots of black deposit on your exhaust would indicate over-fueling.

If it is over-fueling I would expect you to notice a lack of power as well.

When you first mentioned this my first thought was that I'd not noticed anything unusual when I perform my usual scan of the car. Checked it after a journey this morning and realised why, the exhuasts are hidden on the 172 banghead

Put had a peek and the exhuast is soot black, so looks like it's burning way too rich a mixture and the O2 sensor is slightly ill. Power seems OK though, although saying that it was only putting out 158 bhp at Austecs rolling road a few months back, so perhaps was on the way out then...

Done some working out though, and the fuel guage seems a bit out as well which isn't helping with my figures. Filled up with 44.14 litres on Saturday when the warning light had just come on, and the trip computer shows that I've now used 37.35L (8.3 gallons), while the fuel guage needle is sitting halfway down after the last mark, so 1/16 of a tank; and 6.8L certainly isn't a 1/16 of an tank on the Clio!

I've never had a guage that is accurate. They all seem to take 3/4 useage to show half and then the last half is really only 1/4.

Best way to work it out is brim the tank each time (the amount you put in is then exactly what you have used to do however many miles).

A friendly MOT place may do an emissions check for a few £. This would show a faulty O2 sensor. Can't think what else the problem would be (very dirty air filter maybe).

your first fault will be trusting any type of economy gauge they are usually at best a rough guesstimate
get the emission checked at a mot centre and go from there

dont be tempted to remove the tank sensor nono as the tanks are terrible for warping and you will end up needing a new tank as you will never get the locking ring back on
