My 205's gearbox is feeling less and less "tight". There is more vertical movement in neutral and its becoming increasingly difficult to make a smooth gearchange.

Can this be sorted cheaply with a new gear linkage? Possibly a quickshift one. Or is this time for a new gearbox?

Probably your linkages. They are a plastic cup on a steel ball and as its quite hot down there they have a tendancy to wear. You can buy new ones but you can replace them with steel cup versions. Also the bush on the bellcrank beneath the downpipe can wear making it worse.

ive got the pugracing linkages http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index. and a quickshift from PRD with a new bush, it certainly made a huge difference, but i wouldnt say the shift is tight. I think its just a trait of old cars in general, not just old peugeots!

You could also change the 'box oil. 75w80 is the correct grade (2l capacity).

If its old or has an ep80 in it now you will notice a big difference.

BTW my 109K miler is slicker than a 50K Puma 'Box and a 40K WRX 'box.

The general view is to avoid the quickshift linkage on an old 'box, new rods would be worth having though.

yeh im not greatly fussed on my quickshift. i wouldnt say the throw is that much shorter, but there is less movement side to side i.e. 1st to 3rd. Also it looks like its in 4th when its actually in neutral
