Peugeot builds 4WD soft-roader

New diesel-powered 4007 is roadbound

Peugeot 4007

Peugeot's going to build a 4x4 SUV soft-roader. The new 4007 gets one of its HDi diesel engines.

The result of co-operation between Peugeot-Citroën and Mitsubishi, and the French company's biggest car will be on sale during the second half of 2007.

According to Peugeot, the interior of 4007 has been designed to extend the marque’s appeal and values in this sector by being functional and stylish with plenty of storage capability.

The 4007's 2.2-litre diesel engine, featuring its Diesel Particulate Filter System (DPFS) and direct common-rail injection, was developed in partnership with Ford. Bolted to a six-speed box, it develops 156bhp and 280lb-ft  of torque, and can run unmodified on a 30 per cent mixture of diesel biofuel.

Peugeot boasts of the engine's economy, reckoning that its emissions performance is among the best in the SUV sector. The engine is combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox to make the best use of the high-torque characteristics of the 2.2-litre HDi diesel engine.

The 4007 gets electronic control management on all four wheels, said "to increase both the driver’s confidence and the vehicle dynamics for on-road driving behaviour." Peugeot does not mention off-road behaviour, saying that steering, suspension, four-wheel-drive system, brakes and tyres have been developed to achieve maximum efficiency.

Ho-hum, more than a bit me-too...

If you can get past the mouth with mouthguard grille it looks quite nice. Only thing is that when all the bits fall off they are more likely to break as they will be falling from a greater height laugh

Am I just getting old is each new car launch more and more boring? Every manufacturer seems to have their own detailed styling "skin" which is just stretched over a big wooden mould of whatever genre car (SUV, MPV, mini-MPV etc) they are creating.

I wonder if manufactures put extra models out to purely dilute the reliability statistics somehow? I can see these being popular with the 40mph numpties at large just as well they never get taken off road laugh

Found this on Just-Auto - explains the styling:

"If something seems familiar about Citroën’s new C-Crosser sports utility vehicle (SUV), and its Peugeot 4007 twin, first details of which were announced today (26 October), that’s because they've already been previewed by Mitsubishi as the new Outlander, already on sale in the US and Japan and new in Europe early next year."

Product planners must have suddenly gone ooopps forgotten a crossover vehicle. Lets get one quick.

Just looked at the photo, its so ugly im close to vomiting, It looks so bland and revolting.

Its just another soft roader, would be better off with a proper car like a Golf or something.

Yawn. More automotive drizzle

Any chance of a Short wheel base 4007 Rallye? Doubt it somehow.

What does Peugeot think its doig these days? Everything was so good with the 205, 306 and 106 but since then its all been mushy and curvy and bland.

Dont mind it being curvy (better than being styled with a rule)

Just dont understand the huge grill mouth thing.

How can automotive designers design something like that and actually think "yes this is beautiful"

The designers at Peugeot need lessons from Alfa Romeo, since they have got it 100% right with the Competizione

Edit - just looked at the Citroen counterpart and it is a lot better resolved IMO.

The Outlander is the best looking by far though.

None of these look good at all! They are big ugly tanks! If you need the space, just get a flippin' estate! Ugh so simple!

My immediate thought when I looked at the Peugeot was of the SsangYong Rodius. I can't decide whether it bears any resemblence or whether it just invoked the same level of repulsion in me. It looks horrible. The Mitsibushi, upon which the PSA vehicles are based, looks like a Japanese 4x4 - the Peugeot just look cobbled together. I realise it is based upon the Mitsi,, and so they only have limited scope to differentiate themselves, but they don't have anything particularly French about them. I hope Renault's forthcoming effort will be better resolved.

I must say I really like the Citreon, just something about the front styling very appealing. It would be top of my tree if I needed one of these. In fact I'll need a 7 seater soon are these 7 seaters ??

Shouldn't this have been in the shed of the week category? Looks extremely dull. Probably just as dull to drive, and will be bought by dull people who live in dull suburban boxes trying desperately hard not to look dull. Do we need yet another soft (i.e useless) off-roader? At least it's Japanese built so shouldn't do the usual Citroen/Peugeot party trick.

PSA won't build anything themselves - those will be built in Japan along the Mitsu.

I know it's not really PH fodder, but in the recent What?Car reliability survey Citroen came an astonishing 6th, behind Honda, Toyota, Mini and a few others, but well ahead of VW, Merc, BMW etc!

Guess where I work!?

That quote was, as you say, astonishing! So I checked, and Citroen was 26th in the manufacturers league table, 7th from bottom. See it yourself at www.whatcar.com/news-special-report.aspx?NA=214562&EL=3121185#
What were you looking at?
