Friend was driving home from work and a warning light came on, according to the manual its low coolant, pressure or the fan. The light went off and hasn't come back on. i checked the coolant any way but i couldnt see a level dispite rocking the car. so i topped it up any way and it took 200-250ml of water, there was no maximum specified so i filled it up. i then started the car to see if the level would go down, but it didn't. i then noticed after a couple of minutes the water was starting to get warm, is this normal ?

There will be a line somewhere, as a rule expansion tanks arn't more than half full when cold to allow for expansion, on my 106GTi the tank was actually part of the radiator and when mucky it was hard to see the line at all.
The water will get warm as the engine heats up but keep an eye on the level as it is vital to prevent engine damage, it could be something as simple as a knackered cap on the tank. If it is full to the neck I suggest you clean the tank to find the line and adjust accordingly.

the cars going into the garage on monday to have a leak fixed, think its the sun roof so its not related so it will get loked at then.
i couldnt see the water level because it was an orangey brown colour or a maximum level marked on it. so you think there's too much water in it now, will this do any short term damage i.e driving 2 miles to and from work just for today ?

If it is a kind of sludge, check under the oil cap also. The water could be just rusty from not being serviced if not the headgasket could be fubar.
when i took the cap off the coolant there was some white slime under it. someone else said if the head gasket has gone the warning light would have stayed on, other wise i would have checked the oil because i was told it goes a milky colour when the head gasket goes ?
the car was serviced maybe 2 months ago.
