I reckon engine mountings too. To start with at least. Does it wobble as much when you are stationnary?

Hi Rachel

I used to own a 1.9 205 (absolutely cracking car, loved it to bits, and really miss it!)...although I can't be any direct help, I used to use www.peugeot205gti.co.uk/ that site with it's forums (and also their FAQs) when I had problems - take a look there and do a search for similar questions it may yield something.

Hope that helps
Tony

(PS: I moved this topic from General Gassing for you to the French Bred forum. You will find more Peugeot specific people in here)

I absolutely love this car, I have owned loads of cars, but have had this one for 15 years!!!!!

Blimey, you DO love that car! so did you buy it new or did you pick it up 2nd hand in 1991? Every so often somebody (like yourself) mentions about their 205 GTi and I go bleary eyed and find myself looking through Autotrader and PH classifieds wondering how much it would cost to make one as good as new!

What colour? (if it's graphite grey I'm going to cry!)

So did you get the 2nd generation then with the clear indicators and reversing light in the bumper (1991 was roughly when it changed, wasn't it?)

I am ludicrously jealous, I must be honest!

You mind my asking - how much did you pay for it in '91 ?

it's either a gearbox mounting gone or the subframe bolts have gone awol - had this problem on my first 205, reasonably common due to the hard suspension and cheap to fix

Umm its a Mk1b, thats the one with red indicaters although I swopped mine to clear. Has the round heater controls, not the Mk1 sliders.

ahh exactly what mine was; circular heater controls, and the dashboard with full area (rather than split area at top?). This is all from memory, I stress.

I really am incredibly jealous, and so few miles as well, bravo! If you can post any pictures up, would love to see them...

ah I see, 160k seems a bit more realistic

Now I really am going from a long wonky memory here but I seem to recall it had 3 engine mounts; as you look at the engine bay top left, bottom left, and middle right with one gearbox mounting underneath. Don't take that as gospel at all though.

Best suggestion is to take it to your local garage where you get the servicing done. Sorry I can't be of any more help about that problem!

I use to own a 205 gti & had exactly the same thing for almost 3 years! Never did cause me any problems whatsoeva, & always went through the mot's, so i really wouldnt worry about it, as 205's are like that!

Hi, I use to own one too, until I rolled it, a great car.

If the rear mount has gone, you usually get some problems with the manifold to exhaust pipe seal failing. If you do need to replace the mount, have a look on the website and forum www.205gtidrivers.com/ & http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/ for info

Peugeot only supply the mount and casting for the 205 at about £130 (it was about 4 years ago) but you can get the rubber bush for about £5~10 but it's listed under a 405 component, check the forum/ website for the part number. To change it is a bit of a job as I think the longest drive shaft has to be removed.

Yes, why isn't that surprising, trying to find a trustworthy garage is difficult.

Just checked the Haynes manual I have for the 205 (the older version), as its laying on the desk as I'm about to try and get rid of it on ebay, again. The casting in which the rear mount sits in also houses the bearing for the longer drive shaft, and as the drive shaft has to come out of the box, the gearbox oil has to be drained and re-filled. Not really a difficult job but more of a pain of a job. I remember the driveshaft bearing on mine had to be press out of the casting.

But have a look on the website I mentioned earlier, it could turn out to be a completely different problem or there might be a check for the rear engine mount.

Regards

Taking the driveshaft out really isn't very tricky for a garage (or a half decent spanner monkey). Bit of a pain as you have to drain the gearbox but not hard.

P.S. JustGTis are not know for being cheap...

Driveshafts also cause this problems, notably aftermarket ones.

hello if your still having problems with you gear stick woble you'll probably find the gear links have worn these are little rods with a plastic cup inside them they tend to go hard cause thery're close to the exhaust i have 2 pugs and i've had to change mine they've been known to acually fall off when racing and you can get up rated ones but you should still be able to get them from peugeot the rear engine mount underneath which houses the driveshaft does not normally fail as this would result in the whole engine moving back and forth this is a simple job to get fixed and should take no longer than an hour

not normally as they come seperarate the ones to check are the ones which run across the gear box one short and one long the longer one shold have a thread on it but dont worry the new one is preset from factory. there is also a gear stick stabliser rod attached to the sub frame this to can wear and is the same style as the link rods but only bigger normally when these items wear the gaers feel sloppy and the engine can make the stick woble whilst driving
