Hi. My wife has a Renault scenic 1.4 'Y' Reg and the 'engine warning' light has come on again!!. I took it back to the dealer and their was no fault registered in the ECU. So they reset it, a few days later it came back on, well to cut a long story short, it has now had some/all off the ignition coils replaced, it could also have had the Lamda sensor replaced and the ECU replaced (but I need to speak to the engineer who worked on it and not the sales guy who sold me it), every time we get the car back it is OK for a few days then the light comes back on. The garage has now offered to buy the car back off us, but my wife likes the car and as it has only done about 34000 miles and is in very good condition I would like to keep it. Any ideas as I am going on a long trip in a few weeks and need the car.

The car seems to go OK, all be it is only a 1.4 and I am used to driving a Subaru!!

It does not miss fire and starts OK, if the light was not on, I would not know their was a problem.

It has been looked at by a Renault Dealer via the Indepandant garage where we bought it.

I have had a look under the bonnet, it does not look like they have replaced all the coils as one has an 03 date stamp.

I was also told to fill up with shell Optimax to see if the problem goes away, but would I need to have the ECU reset first?

Mr's WR Scenic had all the ignition coils replaced under warranty btw, and the AA man said it was a common fault that Renault were aware of.

Is the fan belt correctly adjusted?

I am not 100% sure which warning light you are referring to, BUT if you mean the ignition warning light if the fan belt was slack, the alternator would not be charging the battery sufficently, causing the ignition warning light to come on.

However if you mean the light with an engine symbol, it could be one of a number of things, usually electrical, normally to do with the engine management system, but there is always the possibility the light itself is faulty.

If the car is running OK, and fuel consumption is normal I would not worry too much, I am sure there are many on here that know far more than me...

Good luck anyhow.....

Thanks for that, yes it is the light with the engine symmbol. I am in the IT industry, I wish I could connect my PC up to the ECU to see what it is doing, but that would be to easy and the Renault dealers would not then be able to charge a fortune to tell you that they do not know what is wrong!! Sorry for that, but I am getting fed up with the so called 'experts' not being able to fix it.

I would transfer this thread over to "General Gassing", you may get more response to your question.......

Any coil with a fab date below 330-03 should be replaced, later than that they will be replaced only if they are faulty.
It is rare for the warning light to come on and not record a fault in the ECU, sounds more like cant be ar5ed to sort it. Are there no operating problems at all? I see you say no misfire but does the idle speed vary or drop low? Throttle body / idle valve problems are quite common on these as well.
