Hi,

I'm looking at getting a little pug 106, either a 1.3 rallye or the 1.4 XSi. The thing is I do quite a few motorway miles going to and from uni to home. What are the pugs like on M-ways. At the moment I have a 1.25 Fiesta which I am more than happy with but I fancy a bit more poke and a bit more fun. My fiesta revs at around 4.2k at 85mph and I can live with this happily. I'm not after loads of comfort but just want it to be usuable.

Any advice/previous experiences would be greatfully received

Cheers

hey, i have a series 2 rallye 1.6 which is amazing fun and nippy (few problems but hey forget that), havent been in the 1.3 so not sure what the differences are but in mine its comfortable especially the seats. Althought in 5th at 75ish it revs at between 4 and 5k if i remember when i last looked. But to be honest if you want a car for motorway miles/comfort the rallye isnt the car to get in my opinion, if nice b-roads are then its amazing fun, hope this helps, ben

Thanks, I'm looking to get one in the next month so I'll only have a couple of trips to and back from Uni then it will be the summer hols and I have a great B-Road blast to get to work! I just want something small, fun and simple to blast around in for a few months.
Out of interest, what problems have you experienced with yours?

Thanks

My GTi is about the same, 20mph per 1000rpm in 5th. XSi is shorter geared though, S1 Rallye is even shorter still so would be pretty noisy.

Here's a list of 106 / Saxo gearboxes from the PGAC site:

Hi there - I love the little 1300 rallyes used to look forward to PDIing them (those were the days) buying one watch out for head gasket failures - noticable by an oil leak - oil filters go pourous and leak....

The white steel wheels get very tatty with time

The XSis are much the same - but id got for a rallye

hmm I'd argue with the gearbox ratings.

My 1.1 106 is good to the limiter in every gear.
My own extensive research...ok thrashing concludes:

1st 30mph
2nd 50mph ish
3rd 70mph ish?
4th 90mph ish?
5th 105mph

I'm certain about 1st, 2nd and 5th, can't remember the other two though.

Maybe I got a different box, but it is quite a pokey little car if you rev it a bit and 'stir the pudding' regularly

I've just bought an XSi (see My new toy post lower down this forum...), and i can't reccomend it enough.

Mine is the 1.6, and at 90mph its pulling around 4500rpm...

Go on, do it, buy one!

I toyed with the idea of getting a Rallye, but i went for the XSi in the end because it wasn't as boomy driving around daily, and you had toys like electric windows, which are always nice.

i had an s1 rallye when new, whilst at uni, thrashed the arse off it, crap on the motorway though, noisey, and 85 mph is 5000 rpm in 5th, consequently you'll need a loud stereo, and plenty of oil.

i race a s2 rallye, which is even noisier but that's another story.

in summary great cars.

My car doesn't have the performance you want, but for what its worth my advice would be to get a 4 speed 1124cc 205. 4th is like an overdrive and you can bibble along virtually without hearing the engine tucked behind a truck or cruise at up to 80mph. Top gear is just right for silent economical cruising (about 55mpg at 100km/h or indicated 65mph) but sits nicely in the power at about 80mph, returning 40-45mpg, although a tad noisy.

It's a pretty hard brief to fulfil as performance is often at odds with quiet, comfortable high speed cruising. If you've got bags of cash get a new VW Passat 2.0TDI 6-speed. 80mph is silent and doing 50mpg. I haven't strayed - just went in one the other day...
