Laguna, dare I?!
Discussion
Hi all,
Time to change my beemer so have been doing the rounds trying to figure my options. One that came up was the new Laguna estate tourer (what ever they want to call it). On paper it seems to fit the bill well, decent performance/economy from the diesel lump. Good load carrying in the boot, stylish to some degree or another And plenty of toys on board. Downside is I can't find very many glowing reviews, typical French electrical gremlins seem common, but worst is the gearbox which doesn't seem too strong. Have Renault actually resolved the gearbox issues and if so is there anyway to tell if the box has been replaced with a good one? Given I'd be looking at at lest 3 years old out of Renault warranty cars, should I just forget it?
Cheers,
Rob

The groundskeeper at work has one, he said he can't wait until the HP is up and he can get rid.
Had constant trouble with boost and jumpy throttle or poor performance off boost. Renault diagnostic comes up with "computer says no" all the time so he's left with a car that they think is fine under warranty, but is not.
So, the cars are a bit iffy, and the dealers sound useless too.
Think is he loves it when it's working right, but the comeback from Renault was pants!
Several others had new Renaults and got rid after electric niggles and useless dealers put them off. Now running VAG stuff and much happier.
Shame on Renault imho!

Hi there,
406 110s arent bad cars, as long as it hasnt been run off "red" diesel.....
Look out for full history, belt change isnt until 96,000 miles, Id recomennd it at around 70,000
Low pressure pumps in tanks let go changed loads of these over the years (HDi 90s with siemens injection systems the high pressure pump used to collapse internally and the fuel system, done loads of em too!) , and cause poor starting due to low fuel pressure...
Rear Tie Rods can give trouble with knocking noises....they eat front discs and rears tend to corrode quickly..
Check front shockers for leaks also, make sure electrics work,
V6s are not bad cars, same faults apply (albeit not low pressure fuel pumps) plump for a 2000 on VVT 210 BHP one compared to the earlier one, go for an executive manual and your laughing!
cheers
Ross

Pity to hear those stories about the Laguna II. I was hoping to move up to a diesel sports tourer next year as I'm really impressed with my Laguna I I bought earlier this year. Only thing I would change about it is a little more quality, a sixth gear and diesel power which I thought I'd get in a DCI LagunaII.
Seems I might have to re-think the idea. I was really hoping to stay away from something like a BMW 320D, but maybe I'll have to join all the other faceless buggers and get one. Maybe a Renault Vel Satis diesel, or do they have similar electrical problems? Either that or wait a couple of years and get a Citroen C6 when they have depreciated. Just really appreciating comfy French cruisers with good ride, squishy seats and a quiet cruise. Anyone any bright ideas?

The guy with one at work had a local old timer mechanic look at it. Swapped fuel filter. PERFECT.
To say this car was meant to have had a FSH and a full service when he got it not a year ago, I find it hard to believe it ever had one. He said the filter was black and mushy upto half way...
Either he got a tank full of crap, or it's never been done.
Moral is, don't let a main dealer touch your car, DIY it, or use a known good mechanic and know it's done right!

Hi Ross,
Sorry to drag up this old thread but:
I had a look at a V6 Exec manual estate today, very nice and I think I'll go for it. It was first registered in Jan 2000 though and the dealer (indy) didn't know if it was the 210bhp or earlier model, and I couldn't find anything obvious in the log book to say yes or no. Is there any way to say for definite which engine it has? It certainly went OK and the engine bay looked mint.
Cheers,
Rob
