Had a test drive yesterday in a Citroen C4 3 door. What a very good piece of kit is was. Having paid over the odds for a very dissapointing Mercedes A Class, I feel really hacked off that you can get something so good for so little.

The car we drove was a VTR + and it came with just about everything you would want in a car with the exception fo sat nav.

I am awaiting a p/x figure for the A Class. If they really want the sale then I think we will have one.

Well have taken the plunge. Trade bid on the Mercedes was £12.5K (Not good for a £21K car in March of this year). The good news is that Citroen topped up the negative equity to the tune of £4K including the cashback.

So today I went to pick up a C4 2.0 VTR Plus 3 door with leather trim. Initial impressions are very good, with the exception of an electrical fault that means it will have to go back in tomorrow.

hi guys

dont be so happy about the c4 vtr. i was happy for the first 6 months with mine. now it been 2 yrs i have had mine and my smile has been swept away. my vtr was one of the only 2 yellow c4 vtr in my country and the body color the last 6 months has changed. i dont know how, but the only thing i know is that im treating my cars like babìes. now im waiting for the company to repaint the car. Also my a/c had problems with its switches that took 7 months to be repaired, and the chip will go crazy if you press the car too much.
I know thinking to buy a mercedes clk and get rid of the c4.

Ours went a long long time ago.

It was full of faults which was a great shame really.

What gets me is why you would expect anything else... If the cars were any good, why would they be giving away such a large discount??

As a Citroen owner for the past 4 years (C3 & C5) I get tired of people who knock them just because they are perceived as cheap French cr*p. You tend to find that most manufacturers have some lemons, whilst the majority enjoy many miles of trouble-free motoring.

The deciding factor is how the manufacturers and the dealers try to resolve things. The Citroen dealers I've used up here in the North have been good, we had some problems with the C3 (engine management) which were sorted under warranty, the dealer picked up and dropped off the car at our home so we weren't inconvenienced by having to drive it to the garage.

Unfortunately cviper seems to be having problems which the dealer/manufacturer isn't resolving even though I assume the car is still under warranty?

I tend to avoid the first release of any new car now, the C5 had been out for about 2 years before I bought mine, and so far I have been happy with it. The C3 (Pluriel) however, was one of the first batch, and that did give some problems. However the dealer after-sales service made up for this, and they got everything sorted out with minimum fuss.

Some lemons yes, but it's the number and frequency of problems with French cars that is the problem. I myself have only had Renault problems, but know of many others through work that have had more than the fair share of problems. Maybe it should be looked at the other way round and it is you who has been lucky not having many problems...

Possibly I've been more lucky than others (here's hoping it lasts!!), but if you read any motoring forum there always seem to be people complaining about reliability. Saabs and Alfas spring to mind, so do Renault as you've already mentioned. Yet no one talks of 'Swedish rubbish' or 'knackered Italian stuff', it's always 'French tat'.

Maybe it's more to do with knocking the French than their cars, we all know the French and British don't get on do they wink

And those discounts they offer make them a decent/cheap second hand buy too thumbup
