Renault RS 280 issues... any help please
Discussion
Hi all,
I recently purchased a Renault meagne RS 280 cup chassis. Its probably the most exciting car I have owned! Traded a merc c class for it. Its been absolutely a pleasure to drive. However I have this issue popping up sporadically. It came on with 'check ignition' and then went on to display the engine light and 'check anti-pollution'. Went to a garage and they couldn't figure out anything wrong with the car. Turned it on again and its gone. All good. Drove it for a couple of days. No issues. No lights or loss of power or any noises. The light then popped up again with 'check stop start' and 'check ignition' again. Once again it disappeared and the car seems to be running fine. I am taking it to a garage next week to get a full Renault diagnostic. I was wondering if any one had this issues before? is it a sensor issue? Should I be worried? I haven't felt any difference in the car or heard any misfires etc. I am not very well versed in the subject of motoring but I really don't want to lose this car. Its an absolute gem. Currently its stock, 31k miles. Got bose, upgraded visio system, cup chassis, recaro seats, manual, 19 inch wheels with upgraded bi metal breaks...the lot.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Kind regards

Great purchase BTW what colour??
Its probably the battery tbh. Try this first:
1: With the engine off & cold (it gets very hot in the engine bay so be careful).
2: Find the negative battery lead. Disconnect with a 10mm socket or spanner (be aware the hatchback boot locks if not already open no way to reopen the boot until you put the neg lead back on).
3: Wait about 15-20 mins then reconnect the negative battery lead.
4: This usually clears any faults in memory. The ECU will need to relearn your driving habits for a few miles so expect the MPG to adjust as it relearns your driving habits. This is natural nothing to worry about.
If it comes up again get the actual battery tested after 5 years its most likely close to needing a good replacement (Platinum level is best) so find the best compatible one you can buy as these RS are battery heavy (lots of extras & strain on the electrical circuit).
You can pay a main dealer around £150-200 to hook it up to their servicing computer but no need most of the time.
These RS MK4 are very reliable in general but they all seem to have inexplicable pre programmed ECU errors. Mine displayed similar errors 3 months from brand new last year first time I used Race Mode after running it in very carefully I got steering failure, check ABS brakes & loads of other scary error messages...a simple remove neg battery lead cleared all of that & here I am over 40000 miles later no problems at all except the usual wear & tear on brakes & tyres. Everything else is pretty much flawless!
What about service history does it have a full main dealer service history?
These engines are in a higher factory tune per cc than a Lamborghini so need to be looked after with regular services every 12000 miles! Spark Plugs need to be done @ 37K miles or 4 years whichever comes first do not skip on that one as the engine bay gets super hot they can get brittle & snap off which is an engine out job to rectify! Easier to just get them changed!
How about brake pads you checked the wear on them as the front ones are known to cause constant check vehicle errors when running low. I think they originally designed the servicing intervals for these MK4 RS as every 6000 miles but then changed to every 12000 miles but did not program the check error messages out of the ECU!
PM me here if you need more info I also bought the service manual!

Hi guys,
I apologise for not replying earlier. Truth be told I forgot I even posted. Since then the car has still is giving me problems albeit a bit worse. I changed the spark plugs, coils and battery. It now’s goes into limp mode randomly if I put my foot down on low gears. Some days no issues at all even after a “spirited” drive. The symptoms are as follows
1. Lumpy throttle on low gears to the point of hopping
2. On comfort mode a warning pops up on occasion which clears after restarting the engine. “Check injection” with an OBD reading out “misfire on cylinder four”
3.on Perso/race and sports on occasion it cuts out the power all together and goes into limp mode if I put my foot down and code reads “misfire on multiple cylinders” which I assume is due to the vehicle going into limp mode as opposed to to all cylinders having a misfire.
4. No audible misfires and rough idle. Just the lumpy acceleration
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Have you taken it to a specialist to have a look at?
Renault suggest new spark plugs every 4 years. I declined when they asked me to change mine last time, but I'm barely on 18k and no issues to speak of. I'd start there if you haven't changed them already.
These are not the usual signs of battery failure though, you've got something else going on here.

Hi guys,
Yes I have taken it to Renualt and they cannot find the fault. The OND scanner read cylinder misfire on 4. I’m take it for an independent diagnostic in Jan. Just ran fuel cleaner and it hasn’t stopped for two days. I’m hoping it’s nothing crazy! Such a lovely car to drive to be honest. Just realised the seating position is meant to be real low and I have adjusted my seat accordingly 😎

Can you reliably cause it to happen? My old 250 went in and out of the dealer a few times as my seat was creaking and moving.
They 'couldn't find the issue'. I eventually took them out for a drive and the technician saw it straight away. New seat base ordered, problem sorted.
