205 gti 1.9 to buy or not to buy
Discussion
hi all,
my misses had a 1.9 205 gti 1989 model when she was 18, she's now 45
we parked it up in the garage when the kids come along and forgot about it for 14 years , every few years id drag it out the garage and get it running and then park it back up
we then moved house and i needed the garage for my boys mx hobby , parked the 205 down my mates garage in he's yard, life moved on and we forgot about the 205
4 years ago my mate with the garage said hed restore it as it was getting in a sorry state where it was now left outside , at the time i wasn't flush with cash so we came to an agreement that when it was finished id get 1st refusal on having it back and paying him for the work he's done or he could sell it on
well had the random phone call the other day , do i want it back ? its 90% finished just electric windows and rear wipers need sorting and a few random things like the wrong gear nob,
its had new paint
new wheels
cambelt
water pump
water hoses replaced
brakes rebuilt
suspension rebuilt
the only thing that lets it down is he couldn't get hold of the plastic wheel arch trims so had the painter spray them grey , it looks ok in the flesh but id want to put that back to original
he's offered to me probably for a reasonable price
now what would a 1989 205 gti 1.9 60k miles known history for the last 27 years be worth , i don't want it to sell on , id like to keep it especially as it was my misses 1st car , got some great memories
my mates reckon im mad to not snap it up , what do you guys think, ive now got a garage to put it in as well

right ive had a proper look at it now , electric windows and rear wiper need wiring up , its had brake suspension overhaul , respray , cambelt water pump , a few water hoses changed , and its running and driving ! 7.5 k seem a bit much or is that reasonable ?
Very reasonable! Buy it!If the paintwork etc is to a high standard, then £7.5k for a 1.9 GTI is very good value. I’ve had quite a few - initially when they were ‘current’ cars and then a couple more recently as classics. They feel slow today and need to be driven regularly to keep them running smoothly, but they’re a great car to own.

I had a red 88 1.9 as my first car when I was 17. Bought a mint white 1.9 a few years ago. Soooo good to own. Gets so much love out and about. Truly epic through the bends. Yes straight line performance does not feel like it did back in the late 90s, but the overall driving experience is still brilliant. Prefer it to my 997 c2s.
Good 1.9's with low miles are selling around £15k plus. There is a 1 owner 1.9 Lim Ed (Miami blue, 1 of 300) with 6k miles on the clock right now around £26.5k and it will make more than £40k by the looks of it.
For £7500 it's worth every penny, if you don't buy it I will or someone else!
