Few questions on the gearboxes in the clio rs

Are the gearboxes in the 172/182/197 as bad as they are made out to be?

Do they last any longer after being reconned?

Any ways to help reduce the risk of them going?

Get yourself onto Cliosport.net - much more active than here.

Note the 197/200 'boxes are more fragile than the 172/182 'boxes which aren't too bad. Either way a full rebuild isn't too expensive - £750 or so.

Remember these are 15-20 year old cars which have been driven enthusiastically all their lives. If you drive with mechanical sympathy there's no reason why a rebuilt 'box shouldn't last your ownership of the car.

The gearboxes are fine. However people get over excited on track days and ruin the syncro mesh which causes crunching.

I've got a 200 on 94k, still the original box and no issues. It just depends how much abuse it's been through.

I'd say they are a weak point but its not that bad. I had a 172 gearbox go at around 40k and a Megane 275 'box at around 20k. Both were bearing failures. I don't rush changes or abuse them.
