Renaultsport megane 275 trophy
Discussion
I haven't owned a Trophy but have owned seven Renaultsports including three Meganes, so feel fairly qualified to give you an opinion. I currently own a 275 Cup-S with almost every option on it, so very comparable to a Trophy to drive https://www.pistonheads.com/regulars/ph-fleet/rena...
In short, they are incredible cars to own and drive, but the ownership can come at a cost. Being a Renault tech you'll be well placed to do a lot of the work yourself and may already be aware of the common problems these suffer from. The most costly being that the 275s had a dodgy batch of gearbox bearings, so if a car you're looking at hasn't had a gearbox rebuild, it'll most likely need doing (mine was £1200 at AW Motorworks).
I usually change cars every 6-12 months. I loved my 250 so much that I bought it back after selling it and have had my Cup-S now for 18 months. In that time I've spent around £4,500 on it – servicing, belts, brakes all round, tyres, gearbox rebuild (plus clutch/flywheel) and a few other bits. I have absolutely no regrets and think as long as you go into buying one with your eyes open and aware of what can potentially go wrong, then there shouldn't be any nasty surprises.
Worth giving the PH buying guide a read https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-buying-guides/...
Where are you in the country? I'm sure there would be plenty of owners happy to take you for a spin.
