Will these ever attain collectable as in expensive status?
I've got the chance of one for £2K, albeit with mechanical work needed. The body is good as is the chassis.

Yes. It’s an increasingly rare, increasingly well thought of car. Fairly straightforward mechanically too. Get it!

306, last of the real Peugeot`s, buy it and keep it.
Take a look at this topic. https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Has it definitely got the GTi-6 engine in it? A lot of them were and are used in 205GTi conversions, so quite sought after. If so I would jump in quick.

Don't post a link, someone else will snap it up.

3 or 4 years ago these were easily picked up for under a thousand pounds and occasionally for under £500, so they have risen slightly and £2k appears cheaper than others available.

It's not clear what sort of example you are looking at and what mechanical issues it comes with, but if it's in reasonable nick you'll certainly not lose any money. I wouldn't expect to double your money in a year or two though.

The mechanics on these are very straight forward, just consider all the age and mileage issues.
Body work normally stays rust free, just have a good look all over, particularly the rear inner wheel arches.
Rear axle radius arm bearings are prone to seizure. Recon axles are about £300. Engines are very robust, providing its still standard and not been “modified” or overheated.A new cam belt kit is a must. Gearboxes? Pot luck, depends how good or bad the previous driver was? Steering, suspension and brakes, all very easy to overhaul.
306’s can have wiring issues, particularly the loom from the drivers door to the A post.

Any update from the OP, few years on, and a tidy one is certainly worth owning.

I am tempted by an 1.8l 16v Meridian or XSi to rekindle my childhood, and half wonder if these will follow the GTI-6 somewhat in mildly rising values.
