Hello

I am on the prowl for a 205 XS, i can find GTI's no problem. Has anyone had any luck in finding one of these recently or are they going the way of the dodo

thanks!

I bought mine in may 2020, and had been looking for ages. Since then I've probably only seen about 2-3 come up. Join some of the 205 facebook groups and put up a wanted post for one.

Why an XS? Nostalgia? Friend used to have one in the mid 90's. Decent enough car. But not a classic surely.

I can understand a Rallye or a GTI.

Rallye for ultimate low weight carb fed.
1.6 for purity of GTI feel & original.
1.9 for 'muscle'

I can appreciate that, my first car was a 205 XS and part of me would love one again. Mine ended up with a Janspeed exhaust and two big K&N filters on the twin weber carbs and it sounded fantastic. Then I crashed it and had a bodykit fitted and sprayed Kawasaki green... Think it ended up wrapped round a tree by the guy I eventually sold it onto.

Same for me, i also had the Janspeed exhaust with rotted through! I had the GTI bodykit on mine and loved that thing....

Great cars - I remember a few of us in our uni motor club having an XS, probably because they were easier to insure than a GTi. I bought my one for £300 after it had been owned by about 3 others in the club and done a fair few 12-cars and road rallies - and the rear beam somehow wasn't knackered! Mind you, was on its 2nd engine and 3rd gearbox by the time it got to me. I'd imagine a lot of them were broken for their gearboxes for rally spares as the XS had the shorter ratio box.

I understand that - I had a Citroen Visa GT which was very similar with, I think, the same 1360cc engine on twin carbs and it was simply brilliant, I loved that car and they have practically vanished from the planet now. The only bad bit was the very weird and specific Michelin TRX tires it needed as they were twice the price of anything else.

In fact they are almost extinct - ~I've just checked on howmanyareleft and it is just 3 on sorn and that's it. Mine got written off in 1993 when some tt hit me head-on in a housing estate and even then there were only just over 500 by 1994. I only over saw one other in the 10years I had it so they were pretty thin on the ground to start with. Good luck with your XS hunt, my father had one for many years and loved it!

I had an XS back in the day and it was a proper little rocket having very short gearing- very similar to a Rallye I imagine. Had it a year whilst I became old enough to insure a 1.9.

Plus that is a phase 1. My first decent car was a G reg 205 XS in 1994 with 60K on the clock and one owner from new. Compared to the C reg Escort 1.3 I was driving at the time it felt like brand new.

The 1360 TU3S only had 85 BHP but it was a revvy little thing and sounded nice with the twin choke carburetor. As has already been said, it also felt quicker than it should due to the very short gearing of the gearbox.

I loved it, I think it was a much better car than the (admittedly thrashed by the previous owners) 1.6 GTi that replaced it.

The XS to me felt perfect, light, great handling, sweet little engine and lovely short gear rations.

If you register here for free you can get access to the market place (Peugeot Sport UK) and forums - someone may be able to point you in the right direction: https://pscuk.net/registers/pscuk-forum-member/

It seems you've already signed up to the 205GTiDrivers forums, so I'll remove that suggestion.

Coincidentally there have been 2 listed on 205 Facebook groups in the last week. Did you see them?
