First car for my son is a 2012 Clio 1.2 - so only 75 bhp but a reasonable first car. It has done 41k miles but I cannot see any evidence of a cam belt change.

Whilst the mileage is quite low, it should have had the cam belt change by now. It may have been done but as with many cars in a “budget” price range, service history is a bit patchy

How urgently should this be addressed - I know it is not a massive cost but from what I can see of the belt, it looks ok. I am trying to decide whether to get it done immediately or wait until a service or not is due

Would you take the risk or just swallow the cost?

cam belt roulette, a game you can't win, as either way it's going to cost you money.

do you want your son to be driving along the fast lane of the motorway when the cam belt lets go?

that should help you find the answer.

Much as I thought - and I do agree - just painful forking our more cash for him but he should have checked the history a bit more carefully!

I know it might be a scary concept, but if you are handy with the spanners you can do it for less than a ton, including buying the kit and the special locking tool.

probably take about 2 or 3 hours on a weekend.

If the car has Renault service history and it was replaced by a dealer, then your local Renault dealer can look up on the national system to see if a cambelt change is recorded on there, problem is not everything is recorded on it, it's a case of it being only as good as the information inputted but it's worth an ask.

Alternatively PM me the reg and I can look this afternoon, I'm now on furlough until lockdown ends but I do have to pop in briefly at around 14:00 to pick something up, I can look then.

Sorry I haven’t checked back on this thread for a couple of weeks.
Thanks for the offers of help but I think I will just get it done - hopefully next week - as I would rather know for definite that it has been replaced.
