My OH bought a new Captur 5 months ago and is very happy with it. That is, apart from the 'button' you press to open the dashboard storage compartment (not the glovebox) which has worn down to the plastic i.e. the vinyl that covers it (and the entire dash I would have thought) has gone completely. And remember this is a 5 month old car that has done about 2,000 miles. When my OH took it into the dealer he made a great play of the fact that he could see fingerprints on and around this area. Yes, that's right, fingerprints. It's almost like he doesn't expect people to touch the dashboard. He said it must be something to do with how the dash is cleaner but my OH only uses a soft, dry cloth.

Renault have stated that this is not a manufacturing issue so is not covered under the warranty but are prepared to cover 80% of the repair bill which is about £800 as they want my OH to cover the other 20% which is c.£160. Me being a cynic can't help thinking that if they are happy to cover 80% of the cost then they must know there is some issue but I'm sure they would just class it as goodwill.

I have read that some people are experiencing similar issues after using hand sanitiser/wipes; the alcohol in these could be strong enough to strip the covering. And whilst my OH does use these when coming out of a supermarket no other part of the dash is affected e.g. steering wheel, gear knob, etc.

Have anyone suffered anything similar?
