I've been doing some research with a view to hopefully buying a 172 or 182 later this year.
The Trophy is clearly the holy grail, but for the extra money they demand, I cant really justify one right now. But the few I've found for sale seem to vary hugely in price.

This led me to 172/182's. And the same seems true. There are some clearly very good examples around, but some are demanding nearly Trophy money.
At the other end there are some very tidy looking examples with up to date service history etc for under 2k, some well under 2k.

Why is this?? Are some owners just chancing their arm?? Should I be wary of the very cheap ones??

They just seem so hard to value when there are such price discrepancies.

I'd always go for a cheap one providing it drives nicely and has proper proof of the cambelt/dephaser change.

They do seem to be going up in price though , i got my 172 cup for 1200 , my ropey 182 for 600 , not a chance of that now .

Since my thread the other week I’ve talked them up over £2k haha

Seriously though, there does seem a lack of cheap ones about suddenly. Prob just wait a bit and there will no doubt be some about soon.

I know someone who’s going to scrap one that needs an engine. Wish I had the space for it.

That’s interesting, usually advice would be buy the best you can afford.

There are a few sub 2k examples and I guess that’s was my point, what’s the difference between a sub 2k car and an example around the 3-4K price. On the face of the adverts and pictures, there doesn’t seem to be a huge difference.

Their reputation as the best affordable hot hatch has certainly kept prices keen.

I'd rather just get something that drives nice and is cheap .

Things like suspension you'll probably want to change anyway .

I agree, drive a few cheap ones, pick the one that drives the best and gives you the feeling it’s been well serviced, and spend the saved cash on good quality dampers and suspension parts

I'd probably prioritise it something like....

1) Rust - Can be costly to fix but not much areas to go wrong
2) Camp belt/Dephaser/Water pump with PROOF
3) Gearbox/Clutch - check for crunches from 2nd to 3rd when booting it
4) Decent enough service history

The rest is easily put right for not a lot of money.

Try and buy from an enthusiast although this will likely command a premium. I wouldn't buy the cheapest, middle of the price range would be my punt.

Unless you get very lucky of course...

Thanks mate. Sound advice. I was watching one on fleabay last night, it went for £1170. Seemed to good to be true. Yet, as you say enthusiasts seem to be demanding upwards of 3k.

Strange market.

Re rust , these aren't known for rust problems there not like Ford pumas .

They aren't known for rust....yet.

The Ph1 and Ph2 172s are just starting to show it appearing on the inner rear arches, so it's worth checking. Easy to do, just remove the rear speaker grills and have a peek down with a torch.

Thanks AndrewGP. More sound advice.

This appeared on fleabay earlier.

Seems too good to be true, certainly keenly priced.

Really like that colour. Wouldn’t say it was too good to be true price with the mileage? The people wanting £4K/£5k are just having a giraffe

Agreed on the colour. Probably my favourite too.
I didn’t think the mileage was horrific TBF.

I guess it wasn’t original, that may have a factor on the price. Does originality bring a premium??
Although the mods all looked in keeping and seem popular with many owners.

As an owner of an original, unmodified and relatively low mileage 172 Cup, I would say buy a Trophy. I don't think the Cups are going to climb significantly in value any time soon. But a Trophy with freshly serviced or replaced original Sachs dampers will hold its current value better. They only made 500 Trophys (525 with the Swiss ones), whereas they made thousands of 172 Cups, with 2,231 registered in the UK.

There are still 411 Trophys left, out of 500 originally registered in the UK:
https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/vehicle/renault_clio...
(My old one, No. 298/500 didn't make it, was exported to France and written off by an a-hole in a Z4 cry)

Whereas there are still 1,266 Cups:
https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/vehicle/renault_clio...

Although the 172 Cups are dropping like flies compared with the 182 Trophys, which is probably due to the lack of ABS and that they tend to get turned into track slags.

I've always thought the perfect FWD Renaultsport Clio would be the 172 Cup with Trophy suspension and seats (plus an Orbisoud exhaust and K-Tec remap). The Cup is significantly lighter (1,021 vs. 1,090 kg) and a nicer colour. The Trophy corners much better, and has nice seats. Looks better with the V6 spoiler also.

No rust on mine yet, and going to be 19 years old soon!

Yeah mileage is fine but was just meaning it wouldn’t be mega bucks due to the 100k mental barrier people have. My 172 is approaching 130k and engine seems sound as ever.

Like you I had a Trophy when they were released & enjoyed three years of track time.
When i purchased mine there were really good deals so when I came to sell lost very little.
Does anyone remember the Cadwell event where three were written off in the morning or the World Series event where we had a huge group of us on track?
Should be a photo of all the cars in line going down Craners, anyone got one?

My brother runs a RenaultSport specialist and having seen all sorts of cars coming through his workshop and speaking to the owners, (not surprisingly) more expensive does not mean better.
Having driven rough ones and tidy ones, its very evident immediately whether its a good car or a bad one as soon as you view/drive it.

Some high prices will be people chancing their arm/overvaluing the work they've done, and some low prices will be bargains but most I imagine will be shiny or just photogenic pups

A good half way house if you fancy something a bit special but aren't willing to pay for a trophy is a 182 Cup.
The are rather rare, only come in inferno orange or racing blue, the come with light weight cloth interior, halogen headlights, cup suspension etc, but retain air conditioning (not climate control) and cruise/traction control.

There were only 539x 182 Cups made (168 orange, 371 blue)

Coincidentally I'm looking to sell my Inferno 182 cup, 127,000 miles in really tidy condition with the Cambelt, Dephaser, water pump etc changed last year for £2600

Some good information on specs and build numbers here

Hi ya,

A useful source of info indeed.

Just a quick question, if a 182 is advertised as a Cup but has the darker half leather trim, is it likely not a Cup??

And is there a link to yours for sale?? Or a clue as to where I can find it, assuming links may not be allowed??

Right the cup thing gets slightly confusing.
With the 182 you could get a:

Normal 182: various colours (including orange and blue) fully spec’d with silver wheels, leather, xenons, climate etc

Normal 182 with cup packs: as above but with a larger spoiler, cup suspension, gunmetal wheels, front splitter
(I believe there were 2x cup packs, one was spoilers and splitters, and one was suspension and wheels)

182 cup: only in orange or blue, cloth seats, air conditioning, halogen headlights, bigger spoiler, splitter, cup suspension, gun metal wheels, steering wheels without thumb grips, etc...

Lots of people advertise Clio 182 with cup packs as Cups which isn’t technically correct.
Mine has a chassis sticker in the door shut saying it’s a cup.

All this info is in the link I posted earlier but it is quite a long read

I’ve not actually got round to advertising mine, am planning to give it a good clean and get it advertised this weekend (weather dependent) so can’t really supply you with a link lol.
