Apologies in advance for 'nice problem to have' nature of this question...

Essentially my in-laws have a place in France that currently has a UK supplied but French registered and insured car residing there.

However, said car is going to cost a small fortune for a local main dealer to fix a few relatively minor issues, so we want to repatriate it to the UK and 'swap' for a car currently registered and insured in the UK.

So, the question is, does anyone have knowledge of registering / insuring / testing cars in France and then moving back to UK?

French MOT is for two years, but I'm assuming there is a grace period before getting re-registered / MOT'd in the UK?

It could be that the cars are swapped back, so could the French registered car be left on French plates etc?

So many questions...any answers mucho appreciated!

You have 6 months grace before you have to import the vehicle permanently. All the info is on the dvla website "temporarily importing a vehicle"

Great - thanks.

So in theory the car could still be registered, tested and insured at the French address for 6 months whilst being temporarily in the UK? Would be plenty of time to get it fettled and then driven back across.

(Possibly more complicated having a UK registered car over in France for a similar period however)

More digging needed!
