Hi everyone, I’m new to this site and hoping to get some advice to help my situation.

I have a 2010 Peugeot 308 GTi 1.6 petrol THP 200 with engine failure.

From what I understand the timing chain went which caused pistons and discs to also break so the car is a non starter.

I’m told it’s a big repair, whether to replace parts or engine. I’ve had the car less than a year and already spent a bit fixing it up so pretty frustrated with this. It’s done 65,000 miles to date.

I’m in two minds as to whether it’s worth getting a used low mileage engine to replace it as I know the car with all its faults, or to replace it.

I need something to keep me going for the next few years until I finish studying that is reliable. But money is tight so buying another car is also a gamble that could cost a lot in the long run if I’m unlucky.

Would really appreciate some insight, or hear about decisions made by any of you who were faced with the same situation.

Many Thanks!

I had a similar situation with a different marque. Big end went and it required an engine rebuild (or replacement engine). I really didn’t fancy taking a punt on a second hand engine. The rebuild was quoted at circa £4K.

Pre failure, the car was worth £6k. I sold the car spares/repairs to a specialist breaker for £2.5k and moved on.

It was down to cold hard cash. I didn’t want to throw good money after bad. Wasn’t prepared to take a risk on an unknown engine, so cut my losses.

Price up the options, it should become fairly clear how to proceed once you have the figures.

When you say pistons and discs broken, what do you mean? When a timing chain fails the pistons will touch the valves in the cylinder head.
I`m pretty sure this engine is designed so that just the rocker arms break, so its not a major engine blow up.
I would have a word with a small independent Peugeot/Citroen specialist.

How do you determine a car's "star sign"?

You can normally hear if the chain (tensioner) is on its way out because it sounds worse than a diesel when you start it up, they dont tend to break (the chains that is) so it sounds like poor maintenance thats caused the failure.
The easiest option now is to find a replacement engine, the 156thp's are more common than the 200thp but i would look for the correct engine first because there is one or two minor differences.
