Hi, yesterday I was driving home and went to put my foot on the clutch and it wouldn't go all the way down.

Eventually, it did and I carried on home..

Today, I took it for a service and the mechanic said the clutch master and slave cylinders looked fine. He said I was out of brake fluid so he topped that up.

However, on the way back today it did it again, I could press it 3/4 of the way down but not enough to change gear, however as soon as I accelerated it went all the way down. I waited for it to happen and pressed the accelerator and it went down again, so this is the fix for now but does anybody know what could be causing the issue?

I'm meant to be going on a 240 mile trip tomorrow, so just wanted to get an idea or whether I should use the car or not.

It's a 307, '54 plate, 116k miles.

thank you
luke

Two things, one silly the other serious? Just check to see if something has dropped down behind the clutch pedal. Then talk with your mechanic and be prepared to have the gearbox removed. Could be the clutch cover ?? I would not chance using the car for long trips.

If it was out of fluid I'd expect the clutch to be soft rather than extra hard. Maybe the pressure plate is kaput? But that wouldn't explain the relationship to the throttle pedal. Either way, if you're losing fluid this is dangerous, as you could be left without brakes, and that's not a situation you want to be in. I'd get the hydraulic system checked. In fact, when this happened to me in the past it turned out to be a master cylinder, which eventually gave up the ghost and left me stranded.
