Hi All,

Have a couple of issues with my 182! Wondering if anyone can shed some light.

First up is changing gears - There's a lot of play in the gear stick - it doesn't move around when accelerating which seems to be more common - but certainly in second gear for example, the gearstick moves say, 3/4 of an inch forward if you move the gearstick? At first it lead to some very embarrassing moments as it felt like you were in gear but it hadn't gone in - was avoiding slamming it around due to the JC5 being weak!

If i go into reverse, I need to keep the lift up on, move the gearstick around/into second to access the gears 1-5 - if i don't the actual stick won't go anywhere except for reverse again - also finding that when I change down into first, i'm moving the actual stick more over to the left than i think is normal to slot it in.

FINALLY - When hard accelerating in 1st and going for second, if rushing it I get a slight crunch but goes in - only time i get any crunching - from what I can tell the JC5 doesn't like being rushed anyway and the more common issues are with 2nd to 3rd constantly crunching

The actual box for the majority seems to go through all gears very well (so touch wood, doesn't need a rebuild), the problem feels like it's with the actual stick and maybe the linkages - but before I spend out on having that looked at, has anyone had any of the problems above and found a fix for them?

Thanks!

Hi mate,

I've owned several Clio 172's/182's and still own one now, so hopefully I can shed some light to some of your questions.

re. the gearlever slop. This is most likely due to a worn gearbox (dogbone) mount as the rubber bushes get soft over time. I always swap mine over for polyurethane bushes. Makes a massive difference and the gearchange is fixed. This only costs £30 or so and is an easy fit (two bolts).

re. getting it into reverse. This sounds like your gear linkage needs adjusting slightly. Again not a big issue, and any competent mechanic will sort it for you very quickly.

re. gearbox crunch. This is due to a worn gear syncro. You can get a replacement gearbox from a breaker car for £100-£200 or get yours refurbished. Try easing the gears in slightly slower for the time being, as this may stop the crunch.

All the above are common Clio issues and I've experienced all of them rofl

There's a good community on cliosport.net by the way. They are very knowledgeable and it makes owning these old French cars much less scary.

Thanks a lot! The Crunching has gone out of nowhere (it was fairly rare anyway) so fingers crossed on that for the time being! First gear launches aren't my thing anyway.

Joined up! Got a mechanic re doing linkages, tightening the Poly dogbone mount etc. Feels like the gearbox isn't always there with the rest of the car, but when it is the box feels very nice and slick (but still doesn't like being rushed too much) - looking forward to getting it back 100%
