clio mk2 1.2 16v misfire & blackbox

my sons car has developed a misfire when cold and this came about roughly the same time the i spy black box was turned off by the insurer.

the misfire isonly there when cold and is roughly when the cold start revs drop down to 1000rpm. it starts at 1500 then gradually settles at 500.

when it starts to warm there are no issues. the eml is not illuminated and no fault codes are present.

i've changed the battery, cps, coil, plugs. no difference.

i've also cleaned the main earths. i've twiddled with various wire connections and loom parts. no difference.

i know this is common and there are different causes but it's now getting very annoying.

any more to the above i could try?

also, when his insurance expired the insurer said they would remotely switch off the blackbox.

i'd like to remove it but i can't find it. i've looked around the ignition and the fuse panel. my son said the engineer was fiddling around the ignition/steering area when he fitted it.

any ideas of where it may be and what it looks like?
