Bought my lad a very clean and original mk1 VTR, but the brakes are pretty dire.
Not sure if it’s because I’m used to the brakes on my mk3 rs, or if they are just actually rubbish.
Would upgrading the pads make much of a difference, if so what do I buy?
Or is there something better we can fit? Thinking some stock brakes from a different model which could be sourced cheaply.

My first car was a phase 2 VTR some 15 years ago, and I found these improved things a bit - https://ebcbrakes.com/product/greenstuff-brake-pad...

Other than that, I can't help further, but it may be a start!

Oh, and off topic, show him a few pics of how badly they crash, it might stop him driving it like a prat smile

I'm not certain but i think Berlingo discs and calipers might just bolt on.

If the brakes are the same as 106 rallye/GTIs then 206 GTI caliper bolts straight on are slightly bigger. Plus still fitted behind the original 14s.

What exactly is the problem? If it's just that they need more pedal pressure than you're used to on other vehicles there's nothing to worry about.

You have three options from other models.
You can go 266mm from a 206 GTI
Or 288mm from a GTI-6
Or go for the more expensive Brembo set up from the 406 v6 coupes.

If going 288+ it's recommended to replace the master cylinder from a GTI-6 or from the Xsara VTS.

Bit late to the party, but I'd fit fresh lines, disks and some better pads on the front (standard rear) - the original 247mm brakes are absolutely fine for road use, I had M1144's on my last Rallye and couldn't get them to overheat even on track. It was standard power mind, but a VTR shouldn't be troubling them.
