Started noticing this a couple months ago. Some days it happens more times than others. Sometimes when braking, there is a grinding that you can feel through the clutch and brake pedals. This grinding only happens when both pedals are pressed at the same time. There is no grinding if pressing only the brake pedal and the car stops without issue. Car starts just fine. I don't feel the clutch slipping at all and there is no issue when shifting into any gear. It seems to happen more when first driving the car from cold but even at it's worst only happens 3 or 4 times on a local 12 mile journey.

The sound is very similar to worn pads grinding.  the front pads and discs  were recently replaced as I thought maybe the pads were faulty but the fact that it doesn't reproduce when pressing only the brake pedal makes me believe there is something going on with the clutch. However, the fact there is no issue with shifting, no grinds or anything lets me know the clutch is still functional.

I did read somewhere of a similar problem where it was suggested it could be the 'throwout' bearing/clutch bearing.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would agree with a clutch release bearing making the noise. Best get an expert to try it, if that bearing seizes it will burrow itself into the clutch cover and the clutch will stop working.

Thanks for the advice/help. Just a quick addition. Not sure if it changes anything. When it happened soon after starting my journey this morning the ABS and ESP warning lights came on, and with the ABS not functioning there was no repeat of the problem on the way to work. This could just be a coincidence as it has happened just once on a journey in the past. I did have a problem a few months back with the same warning lights coming on and after having it hooked up to a diagnostic machine the front ABS sensor was changed which seemed to have cured the problem. Any thoughts
