After one of my pretty much annual "What should I buy" threads last year in which I was looking for a cheap but fun runabout while saving up for another interesting car, It was suggested by several members that I look at a Clio 182 "Full fat" not a Trophy.

I consequently bought a VERY cheap but fairly tidy example for the princely sum of just £500, and have been using it as a daily since!
The added bonus - Working AC!

It's needed a few bits doing, all just general wear 'n' tear - I've had to replace the front shocks and wishbones, new cat, next on the list is the belts.

Otherwise, a very fast little go-kart with no silly electronics getting in the way (you can turn off the ESP) , good on the motorway returning up to 40 mpg.

Last week, I started thinking maybe I should update... and went to look at a Clio 200 Gordini. The thing was huge, heavy, almost identical 0-60. I walked away, £5k better off.
Then I thought OK, lets look at a Twingo 133 - The thing was bigger than the Clio!!!! Walked away.

So the 182 stays. Its a keeper I think.

It is the modern day Pug 205 1.9 GTI
The only thing which stopped me buying one many years ago was that the steering wheel doesn’t adjust up and down so it was tight to my legs ... a shame as I really enjoyed its raw experiance

Awesome little cars! I reckon it's worth holding onto yours as good examples will become increasingly rare over the next few years.

I have a similar situation with my 306 GTI-6. There's nothing worth replacing it with, so I'll just keep it!

Or get a second car and Sorn it. It’s value is way more than £500 to you and provides its properly maintained then there is no reason why it simply will not trundle on and on.

Surely changing the belts are similar to a monthly PCP Ona modern day equivalent.

OP, I can empathise. I bought a 172 with the idea of it being a short-term fun car. But after test-driving a few other cars that I wanted to own (Alfa 147 2.0TS, Clio 197, Fiat Punto Abarth, Civic Type R), I found that none of them was on a par with the 172 for sheer chassis brilliance. So like you, I'm going to do the belts and the brakes, and the little Clio is staying biggrin .

My 172 Cup is definitely a keeper. A properly fabulous little car.

They're ace; I don't blame you, particularly if you can service and maintain it yourself as that is a bargain basement (relatively speaking) way of getting your motoring kicks. cool

I would, but I'm out of space!!!
Lotus Elan in the garage, Mini turbo in the toy shed, half-prepped race Midget under a tarp, van on the street, Clio gets the only other available space.

If I have a warehouse it'd be full by now!!! so many cars I sold but wish i'd kept...

Oh and PCP... Hell no - I don't do cars on credit (or new cars), i get bored of them in a year and it gets awkward to shift a car with outstanding credit (been there) - I would never buy new, its like literally burning money.

I have a 182 Cup, cosmetically shabby, mechanically good with a few upgrades but nothing major, the 182 Cup made me sell my GTR because I couldn’t remember many great drives in the GTR, infact it was a big disappointment in the Alps, where as I have a list of incredible drives and moments in the Clio!

I often wonder what I’d do if something happened to it and the answer is always to get another one HOWEVER, if London’s brainless Mayor gets his own way I will have to pay £12 a day to drive it in the extended ULEZ because it’s a Euro 4 emissions!

I’ll have to think of something else IF that happens but the last thing I want is a Ford Focus sized Clio with 2 pedals!!!

My mate has an 04-plate Clio 182 and he regularly drives into London. His car comes up on the website as NOT being subject to the (ridiculous) ULEZ.

If his car complies then hopefully yours does too. Try putting your reg into this website:

They are very good cars for the money.

Also, the Twingo is built on a Clio chassis anyway so I'd never understand anyone who went for one of these over a 1*2, given the lack of HP

I genuinely don't understand what market gap the Twingo is aimed at now, when it first came out (early 90's-ish??) it was a small cheap boxy run-about, I remember seeing the MK1 a lot around Europe but not the UK.

The 133 is bigger than the mid-sized Clio, so what's it actually for??

Great stuff, really pleased to hear it!

As well as his Clio, my mate also has a Y-reg Mondeo ST24 2.5 V6, one of the last of the old shape. That is also compliant, but his missus' three-cylinder Polo 1.2 isn't, and that's an 03-plate!

I'm sure they just make the whole system up as they go along...

I’m on my second now, after a couple of years in a EP3 Civic Type R it’s refreshing to be in a car that provides some feedback through the steering wheel again. I’ve got a few bits to do on mine but it’s an absolute joy to drive on the limits.

First one

Current one

Loved my 182 to bits, but in the end it didn't make financial sense to keep it (at the time). Needed an awful amount of work to keep it on the road and for the relative value of the car it wasn't worth it.

Replaced it with a Megane 275 which is the right amount of fast biggrin
