Pug 309 Gti or Goodwood?
Discussion
Have had numerous 205 gtis (still kept 4 of them) a 306 rallye and a clio 172 cup i had never really had much interest in the 309 until now.
To say ive an itch to scratch is an understatement, my free time has been consumed by trawling forums/ facebook for an unadvertised well cared for example - and still nothing but a few leads that well are options but not exactly what i want.
for me it has to be a 3dr. the rest not overly concerned aslong as mechanically on point and having MOT is a bonus.
did the public dislike these so much from new that not many had been sold? any help appreciated to finding the one i have been dreaming of lol

I'm guessing you've seen the red 3-door on Ebay for £7500 and it's too pricey?

They do come up but you'll have to be prepared to travel if you want to get a really cheap one I'd say nowadays
Owned a graphite grey 3-door for a few years - great handling and cheap when nearly new as everyone wanted the looks of the 205.
I drove new/nearly new ones back to back with 1.9 205s and bought the 309 as it was cheaper and handled differently

Back in the day I had two 309's.
First was a 5 door non turbo diesel. It was unbelievably slow but a great car. Had over 100,000miles when I bought it and over 300,000miles when I sold it.
At the time a couple of my mates had 205 gti.
I replaced the 309 diesel with a light metallic blue 309 GTI 3 door which I still regret selling.
I always wanted a 309 goodwood as I love the colour.

I owned a red K reg, 5 door, 1.9GTi about 15 years ago. Bought for £1500 from a forecourt. It was in mint condition.
Only issues I remember were the slide roof leaked and when I first got it the tick over was a bit ropey and it would conk out, to remedy this I changed the tick over so it was about 1000 rpm. Not ideal but it did fly after that. Handled superb and having driven a number of 205 GTi's, I felt it was a more stable ride.
Ended up smashing it in to the central reservation after it spun out on the motorway. Insurance paid out £1500 on the strength of the rims being in such good nick!

First car was a 309 (1.3 XL - speedy! ) and later owned a 309 GTI as well as (for a very short time) a 1.6 205 GTI. They were fantastic cars and the 1.3 took an unbelievable amount of abuse over ~50k miles. Sadly, shortly after I sold the 309 GTI I turned down an offer of a Goodwood - for £700. And I think that's why you'll find them harder to find - these cars really were rock bottom priced in the early 2000's. My XL cost me £125 and the 309GTI was £800.
I don't think it's that they didn't initially sell well (although, they didn't compared to even other Peugeots of the day). It's that they got so cheap that people stopped caring about them and when a big bill came, the car would be scrapped (I saw this more than once, unfortunately at a time I couldn't afford to take them on myself). I had a near mint interior I tried selling for ages for £50 and no one was interested so I ended up putting it in a skip. On the one hand it amazes me to see the prices they're at now (especially as I'd actually love another 3dr myself) but on the other hand, it's obviously a result of them getting so disposable and therefore now so rare...
It was a cracking first car though - easy to learn about lift-off oversteer in!

I had a 3 door Goodwood (full power 130 BHP version) in around 95-96 when it was about 3 or 4 years old. I'll be totally honest and say I really didn't like it once the initial couple of weeks or so wore off. Struggled on with it for about 18 months or so but was really glad to see the back of it, just wasn't for me.
I liked the colour but that was about it, put me off leather seats as well for life. Not sure whether one of the cat versions with 122 BHP would have been better, probably would actually and I'd recommend one of them (post very late 92 early 93).
It felt very old even then especially when driven back to back with my wife's 306 XSI she had at the time, didn't handle or go half as well. Pretty sure mine (K189 VPJ) has been off the road for many years.
Couldn't recommend one sorry...........

I had a few of these back in the day (along with most other hot hatches) and the 309 Gti had terrific handling, possibly the best available at the time. It was a better car to drive than the 205 Gti 1.9 but the 309 Gti never sold very well and once they got older had very little value so very few have survived (engines would have ended up in 205's and the 309 Gti's disappeared).
You will struggle to find one now.
The best one I had was a really early car (87) and the previous owner had spent a lot making it quicker / stiffer and the handling was really good. The problem is a 306 Gti or Rallye was a big step ahead from the 309 Gti (in every respect) partly explains why the value dropped and few survived.
Plus a 1.9 205 Gti looks so much better!

I had a red 1993 K-reg 1.9 GTI for my first car in 2002.
Originally wanted a 205 but the insurance was impossible and was really happy with the 309. Loved the box shape and still like cars from this era 994 etc.
Sunroof began to leak and was quite tappety.
The seats were so comfy and the cable pop-out rear windows were so cool.

Always thought the 309 was a better car than the 205, just not as pretty, though they seem to have improved with age and dont look as frumpy as they did, mainly perhaps because everything else is massive now ?
We had a 309 that everyone in the family had for a time and we all loved it, bog basic 309 "Look".
I would go for a normal 3 door, thats the classic look for the 309 GTI, Goodwood looks nice but prefer the original.

My sunroof was fine luckily - still remember the sound of the vacuum seal shutting! The seats were so comfy and the cable pop-out rear windows were so cool.
I did like the levers for the rear quarter windows - have had a few cars with opening rear ones but my current hot hatch has electric versions
Great for hearing the exhaust noise, getting a flow of air through car but avoiding an open front window
