Renault Modus engine problem

Any advice please. My son at uni just called. Low on petrol about 40 miles left. Topped up with a fivers worth at a BP station.
Low getting juddering, slow to pick up and a check emissions warning. He’s limped home but wandering what to do.
My thoughts are contaminated fuel, blocked filter or injectors. A sensor failed but bit of a coincidence that it was straight after filling up?
