Any idea's what these are for?

Evening all,

A car valeting place removed these from the channel under the windscreen (and under the bonnet) on our peugeot 207 as they were clogging up and causing water to build up (which could be heard sloshing behind the dash.)

I have posted i another part of the forum, but a poster has suggested they may be to stop fumes from the engine bay getting into the cabin air intake, which is a big concern as i wouldn't want to use the car without them if that was the case! I thought some marque specific knowledge might help!
