Renault Clio power spluttering...please help

Hi all, my son bought a 2006 Renault clio campus 1.2 petrol
The other day he noticed it started spluttering so I had a drive in it.
Spluttering is probably the only way I can describe it, it's as though someone turns off the power for a millisecond and then turns it back on, this happens when accelerating.
If you maintain a steady speed all is fine.
My first thought was the air flow meter, any ideas or advice would be greatly accepted.
