Cut a long story short we now have two young drivers with test and my wife is constantly having to borrow my car as they take hers (14 Polo). Called in over lunch time with my local Renault dealer on Friday. If i give him our old Clio diesel (1994 and short MOT) I can get a new Clio Play with alloys aircon etc for £9750. Low deposit PCP with low monthly payments seems a bargain. However this seems to be a very sluggish car to drive and actually dangerous in the wrong hands. If I am considering a new Clio is the new 0.9 TCE significantly better?

Yes a Clio TCe is better in terms of speed and responsiveness, however a 1.2 16v is hardly "dangerous", it is perfectly adequate for a new driver.

My first car was a mk3 with the 1.2 16v (D4F) engine. Yes, it was slow, but it could keep up with traffic without issues, was competent on a long motorway run, and surprisingly nippy around town due to the short gearing. The 0.9 will be better, but the 1.2 is more than adequate for a new driver.

The 0.9 is significantly better.

The 1.2 is old, drones and is pretty gutless.

It is however serviceable to be fair to it and when driven hard it does make progress but the side effect of this is it is so loud when worked hard it did get a bit tedious.

The 0.9 is quite a refined thing, does need to be driven a bit keenly to get the turbo going but for what it is it is zippy and lacks the drone of the 1.2.
