Clio 172 Cup - bag of spanners
Discussion
My dear old dad (74) looks as though he probably won't be driving again anytime soon, so I have brought his 2003 36,000 mile 172 Cup back to my house, partly to remove temptation and partly because I feel a bit sorry for the blooming thing!
I took it out yesterday for a bit of a run - first one it has had this year and whilst it goes really well, it sounds terrible at idle - I can't say he has looked after it particularly well - I don't think it has had much in terms of servicing in the past few years and I think I fancy giving it a bit of TLC but am wary that it's probably only worth about £1K and chucking too much money at it will be a bit of a waste of time. I reckon it needs about £300/400 worth of dent removal and paint, all four wheels need refurbing and Lord knows what mechanically.
I read somewhere that spark plugs make a big difference (?) and I have no idea if the cambelt has ever been changed. Firstly, is the former true and secondly, what sort of cost am I looking at for a belt change?
I may well have a few more questions over the coming weeks, as I uncover more horrors
And if anyone has a pair of 2's that go on the B-pillar, I'll take them off your hands. At the moment it's a Cup17

They are fantastic cars, look after it regardless of it's value (which should be more than £1k anyway?).
Mine has never idled very smoothly despite being tip top mechanically, getting the cambelt etc changed is a must though, budget £600-700 at a decent specialist (needs to be done by a specialist).
My old man handed down a rusty 1.3 Mk2 Eacort Estate that cost me more to renovate than I eventually sold it for so think yourself lucky lol!

I've heard the 'dephaser' pulley one these can get loud and need changing along with the cam belt:

He's had it probably 10 years or so and yesterday was the first time I have driven it,
Shame on you! One of the best car's I've ever owned Was looking through some paperwork last night - he bought it in February 2007 with 17,000-ish miles and has put on less than 20,000 miles in 10 years. He has actually spent a fair few quid on getting bits repaired but no service history of any note that I can find
I might take it on as a project to see if I can get it back to something approaching it's former glory. Think mum is quite happy to see the back of it actually - I asked her for any paperwork that might be at their house and she said I could have it

Use NGK - PFR6E-10.
Yep, OE plugs are these NGKs, don't use anything else.As it's a cup, it's unlikely to have aircon. Because of this the belt service inc. dephaser is bit easier and you should get change from £500.
But at that age and with no service history, you'll want to change the aux belt, tensioner, water pump etc. at the same time which is going to be at least another couple of hundred.

Got climate control I think. As it's a cup, it's unlikely to have aircon. Because of this the belt service inc. dephaser is bit easier and you should get change from £500.

The mechanicals worry me a bit. I know it needs doing but without knowing what I'm doing with it long-term, do I really want to slap the thick end of a grand into it?

The (non) changing of belts is a well known thing with these and a big to look for when buying getting it done should make it alot easier to sell and get you a better price. The mechanicals worry me a bit. Though I would change the belts and keep the car!

Ta. Will see what is in there and if not those, get some ordered and swap them over.
Couple of things.1 - To take the plugs out you need to remove the inlet manifold. Then you'll need a new gasket when you put it back on. Well, you're supposed to but people reuse them.
2 - Service life of the plugs is 72k so they should in theory be the originals and not need changing anyway.
Cambelt doesn't have to be £600 if it needs doing. Don't skimp on the dephaser pulley:

I'd give it a good service and some fresh super unleaded. Old oil will make it sound crap but mine always sounded like a cement mixer on idle for the 50k miles I had it but for the sake of £40 I'd change the plugs as well as they can make a huge difference to how it runs and pulls under load:

A decent 172 cup is worth more than £1k, there aren't that many left!

A 172 Cup with that milage is probably worth a fair bit more than £1k in good nick. I realise it needs a bit of work but my point is it won't be money down the drain. I'd be tempted to keep it anyway. Great cars.
Personally wouldn't bother sticking the missing '2' badge back on. From past experience it will only fall off again! I ended up removing all the numbers just leaving 'Cup' on each flank. I bought mine from Renault for a few quid (10yrs ago!).
