hi Does anyone know if I can remove the crankshaft with the engine still in the car. I know Ill have to take off timing belt etc , but is this all easier than removing the complete engine?

Go and research a thing called a flywheel and start there. Pretty soon you'll have your answer.

Yes, you can. Gearbox out, clutch and flywheel off and away you go

Yes it is possible but no one who was mechanically minded would do it that way ,for the extra few bolts and hoses engine and box out and no oil dripping on you .
