S1 106 Rallye gear linkage

Hi guys, have a 106 Rallye ( S1, stage rally car ) and the gear linkage is like stirring porridge to say the least!! All the gears are there and work fine, but for instance when in 1st gear there us anout 2" of play left to right on the gear stick!! I have peered down in the engine bay and can see a rod around 10" long ( hard to get at, the car is a rally car and has underbody skid protection ) moving a couple of inches side to side when wiggled. Is this sonething which can be adjusted tight again or is their worn bushes responsible?
