I never really paid much attention to french cars until recently, mostly due to seeing mates having problems with various pugs and saxos but after having a renault 5 van and 3 trafics I'm happy to admit I was very wrong and renault can build some stuff far better than the germans. I want a very comfy, supple riding large estate car preferably with decent mpg and can do 500 miles a day without a sore back. I've not driven a decent laguna before, only a £250 shed that was very tired are they soft and comfy, or sporty and harsh? Are the lagunas as reliable and cheap to run as the trafics?

Laguna mk3 is both very reliable (nissan engine and electrics) and very comfy.

I drive a Laguna 3 on a daily basis. It is a comfy car to be in. Can't really comment on the rear seats but as driver or passenger it is a nice place to be.
I get approx 40mpg combined in my 2.0 dCi increasing to well over 50 on a motorway run. That would go up a lot if you got a 1.5dCi. I'd stay away from the 18" wheels though. 16s are just fine.

I've had a Laguna 3 estate and loved it for its comfort, ride and economy. 2.0dci manual, 58 plate. But I had to get rid due to reliability problems. One after the other the electric switches in the cabin failed leaving windows stuck open etc, tailgate struts collapsed on me injuring my arm. Just a constant procession of niggly faults which had to be fixed. Last one was the heater fan being stuck on one speed, obviously an electrical fault but I couldn't be bothered with it any more and traded it in for a Mazda 6.

I still miss the Goona but shudder at the memory of the constant faults. Seriously, a month didn't go by without a new one. Couldn't live with that.
