Try Torx & hexagon keys to see if one will fit. It's possible that it just appears round, or only the first couple of millimetres has been rounded off. It's not very likely that somebody has reused a rounded-off screw - possibly you're seeing the result of a previous failed attempt to remove it.
If the worst comes to the worst, just drill it out!

I'm pretty sure that it was put in there from new. It's a black metal thing which looks untouched rather than rounded off. And I've owned the car since it was 12 months old and nobody but me would have done brakes on it.
