Just wanting some feedback on this Renaultsport specialist firm. They are about half an hour drive from me (I live in Dorset) and I was thinking of going at looking at their stock next week. They have an R26 F1 and couple of early 250 Cups I want to look at. However, googling through some past PH posts earlier and some reviews on them from another site, it wasn't wholly positive! Anyone use K-tec- would you recommend them? I am a bit wary of specialists having got my fingers burned by local Dorset based Subaru specialists Triton a few years back who were very expensive and over-charged me for labour on a couple of occasions.

Bought some stuff over the phone from them, went badly. Spoke to them a while ago about some more bits I needed, ended up hanging up as the bloke was worse than useless.

They screwed up on a belt change on somebody I knows 172., I advised him to go elsewhere like I had done but he knew best.

They have a bad rep. on cliosport.net, or did anyway, not been on there for ages.

Not recent by any means but I used them for a few years in early '00's when I owned my Renault 5 GT Turbo. That was for parts & installation work and I never had a problem.

A few years after the GTT was sold I ended up buying a Mk2 Clio V6 and took the car there for a full service inc belts, stainless exhaust and a couple of other things, and the car was well looked after when it was there smile

A friend of my cousin also used them for his custom turbo'd Clio 182 build and had no issues with them either.

Local to me too. My R26 had a lot of its previous servicing work done there and at main dealers, the same tech works on it now but he went out on his own a little while back and runs a little workshop (Tech-1) down in Poole. They are are fairly sizeable business, been in a few times to look around, ask questions and buy some bits, always seem to be very busy, always seem to have a little set of RenaultSports being worked on. They can't be that bad given how many people use their services or buy parts or cars from them.

Did K-Tec evolve from GT Tuning? I remember GT Tuning and their 5 turbos, they were legendary in the R5 world back in the day.

I like the idea of buying from a local specialist, as you would hope the car would be given a more rigorous checkover than at a normal dealership, but some of the stuff I read on the Review Centre did put me off, I have to be honest. Maybe I will just drive out there and see how I am treated!

A mate and I both bought new R26 Meganes in 2007. I sold mine 6 months later. He still has his it's silver and covered about 30k I think. He keeps threatening to advertise it as he wants a 997. I know he had the belt and pump changed at some Renault forum recommended place oop north a few months back as well. PM me if you want his details. I suspect he wants top money for it though..

David, who owns K-Tec, used to work at GT Tuning in the '90's but left them and started his own business K-Tec in 2000. Previously I'd used GT Tuning with my 5, but moved away when K-Tec started up.

I think GT Tuning moved onto BMW Mini's a few years later.

They have a bad reputation for customer service and remapping. When I had my R26 last year everyone on the forum said they should be avoided. The cars they sell are normally good but are always a grand or so overpriced.

Okay, so the feedback is very mixed, that's disappointing, given they're a high profile firm who's products have been featured in EVO Magazine and are local to me,

So, who do folks recommend as somewhere good to purchase a MeganeSport? I don't mind travelling for a good car and a good deal.

They are expensive yes, but I had no problems with them with my old 182.

I'm not all that sure they are that expensive in terms of their stock, they currently have two cars for sale, £10500-£10995..10/60 reg with 48-55K miles on them, which seems about in line with typical Megane Cups for sale at the moment with that sort of mileage; at least in the rip off south and TBH I'd rather buy one with warranty from a specialist than a car supermarket or general trader....

Well the views are mixed on here, so I am going to take a trip out there in the next week and make my own mind up. The two 250 Cups for sale mentioned above are in my price bracket and there is also an R26 F1, so a chance perhaps to at least drive one and see if I like it!!!

I do take on board the negative comments made and will approach with caution....

Bought a 225 Megane from them a few months back. No problems at all, a pleasure to deal with in fact. Let me drive the cars I was interested in, sorted the finance and delivered it a few days later. Sold them a car prior to that a few years ago, again, all went smoothly.

They've built a sizable business off the back of Renault Sport products so they must be doing something right.

I have been using K-Tec for servicing my 172 Cup for about 3 years (I also live 30 minutes away). I have not had any problems from them to be honest. Can't comment on the remapping or car sales side though.

Let me know how you get on there as I am looking to replace the Cup soon.

I went over there today and sadly the torrential rain and early darkness made test driving impractical. However the guy I spoke to was very friendly, informative and helpful, we chatted cars for ages and he showed me the rolling road in action and gave me some advice on specs and which car to go for. I have settled now on a 250 Cup, not a R26 230 F1. I think for me the later car ticks more boxes.

Apparently they have sold 26 cars this month already so clearly they must be doing something right. Based on what I experienced today, I shall be going back for a test drive and further discussions probably after Christmas.....they have some more cars in my price bracket arriving any day now....

Sounds good then. Glad it went well, first impressions are everything!

They have a dreadful reputation on Cliosport and some other Renault forums, they've had this reputation for years. Search Cliosport for K-Tec and make up your own mind.

Glad you had a good experience with them. Just please don't let them lead you into purchasing a remap off them if you purchase a car, they're notorious for poor mapping and many people on the clio/megane forums have had their engines go because of poor mapping from them.

Really? I am a current member of rsmegane and used to be on meganesport but it died. Please provide links to these many people whose Megane engines have gone pop as a result of K-Tec mapping as I don't recall reading about any other than these frequently repeated 3rd hand opinions.

BTW my own R26 has been mapped by Paul at RS Tuning even though I am 15 min from K-Tec but that is a different story.

I bought a megane 250 from ktec car sales a few weeks ago. Much better buying experience than a main dealer, I spent bloody ages chatting about cars too. Recommended smile
