..I have decided to sell my Mazda MX-5 after only 7 weeks, as the rust underneath is worse than I thought and I really cant be arsed with spending time and money on it...
Anyway it got me thinking about whether I could sell it and buy an old French hot hatch instead and so I started searching for the 306 Rallye....I cant find any for sale!!

Where are they? Even the GTI-6, there are only 2 for sale on Autotrader in the UK at the moment. The 306 Rallye remains the best hot hatch I have ever driven and it would be a pity if they have all disappeared....with 205 GTI values climbing so high these 306 Rallye's deserve to be appreciated.

I agree,the 30616v range were fantastic cars.Infact all 306`s were great.
The one above may be worth a trip to Cornwall?? Yes they are getting very thin on the ground, particularly unmolested ones.If you find a bog standard one (no boy racer mods)that has been well looked after, bite the man`s hand off.

Sounds crazy doesn't it, but French hatches generally don't rust! Our 205 GTI was rust free when we sold it last year at 24 years old and was generally a very reliable car during the 12 years we had it!! Mazdas are very reliable cars, but the rust is hopeless. I never realised how bad MX-5s are until I bought one and read up on the forums.....

There are a few out there for sale but you are better off joining the owners club/forums - prices are all over the place, anything from £600 -£3500

As a word of warning, whilst mine has been relatively reliable it is fairly rusty so be diligent!

Maybe it was just the 205 that was rust free...I think they had very few rust traps. I am surprised by all the comments of French cars rusting. I cant say I have seen many rusty Pugs or Renaults...Usually its electrical maladies that carries them off to the scrappy!

I`ve got a 1994 306GLD,been knocking around our family from new.Its rust free, done 175K still has all the original major units and runs as sweet as a nut.
We have also owned 405`s,406`s and 106`s and they were rust free. When there is a rust problem with these models I bet its because sometime in its life its had a body job with pattern panels.
Peugeot got a bad rust reputation with 404`s,504`s and early 505`s and it stuck for a long time.

hmm, looks like I have the same problem here as with my Mazda MX-5, which is V Reg...16 year old car, bad rep for rust and likely to be rusting by now,

Perhaps instead I should look at the Clio 172/182. These are getting very cheap now and I am not aware of any rust issues. You still see plenty of Mk2/3 Clios on the road and they look tidy enough...

Non rusty 306s do exist. This was the state of my 1997 Gti6:

Which now looks like this:

But my old 1.6 306 wasn't so lucky. Peugeot also didn't bother fitting left rear wheel arch liners to most cars so they end up collecting and compacting mud/water then rotting the whole rear quarter from the inside.

With a shortage of mi16 engines the gti-6/rallye engines are put into 205s. I was looking for a gti6/rallye recently and they do have rust problems and can suffer if the timing belt has snapped or changed incorrectly.

I ended up in a 172 and they are galvanised but there's a mud trap above the rear arch. Timing belts are also bloody expensive
