Hi All,

New to this section of PH and looking for some help, any TU experts out there? I've recently bought a little run around '99 206. It's had a slightly troubled start, I bought with a slight idle issue which was a simple swap of ICV and cleaning the throttle body. I'm going to have to replace the ICV again however as I bought an eBay special which although is much better isn't perfect so an official part is on the cards. However before I managed to change that I hit a poor unsuspecting fox which took out the rad.
So while getting the car back on the road I replaced the following;
ICV
Radiator
Coolant temp sensor
Thermostat
Also had to replace the fan shroud and fan which I'll get on to in a minute.

Before I hit the fox (I'd only had the car 3 days) the temperature only reached around 70 on the gauge. I'm guessing this was due to the ICV keeping the car on the warmup map or similar. Either way once everything was swapped it all came up to temperature fine, fan kicked in and out no problem. The past few days I've managed to finally use the car a bit although it's pretty slow, it runs well enough. However after a steady run up the M1 at around 65-70 a loud screeching sound started. Further investigation highlighted the second hand cooling fan having seen better days and was screeching as soon as it engages.
However as I wasn't giving the car a particularly hard time and as we had temperatures below 5 degrees I don't think I should be seeing the fan come on at all. On the way back again down the M1 but this time going slightly slower, it became apparent that the fan was running for the whole time I was on the motorway. The car does not get particularly hot, never exceeding 90 on the temp gauge but as mentioned the fan is running comstantly, stayed like this for the whole 50 mile journey, as the temp gauge is showing around 87 degrees while running at speed, temp drops very quickly and fan switches off as normal when speed drops.
The car doesn't seem to be loosing coolant, my initial thought is I have a bit of a lazy water pump or does the fan run constantly on these motors in this situation and the one I have just isn't up to the job, seems unlikely. Any other suggestions car is a 99 has done 70k miles so cam belt and water pump aren't far off any way. Any other suggestions on what the cause may be?

Cheers,

Karl

Mr Fox could have head butted the cooling fan rheostat?? damaged it or the wiring causing the fan to play games?
Look through the front grill,you will find it on the O/side of the plastic rad/fan housing.Its held in with a couple of screws and has a multi-plug.

Hi thanks for the reply. All the fan checks out fine I've replaced the whole fan and shroud and although stiff it seems to operate perfectly normally with regards to cut in out.
I'm just confused as to why the engine is running just a little bit to hot, especially in this weather. More I think about it, it must be the water pump.

Try putting the old coolant sensor back in.
