Hi,

We have a little Clio 172 which we plan on turning into a track car, but it doesn't seem to be running very well. It hunts at idle, sometimes the revs drop right down and it very nearly stalls. Sometimes, when stationary and changing from reverse into 1st gear, it stalls. It really doesn't sound very good at idle at all.

Is this a common problem? Anything in particular to look out. We've only just bought the car, but the previous owner had the coil packs, HT leads and spark plugs replaced with new. What else should we look for?

Thanks,

Dan

Checked the idle control valve?
Cleaned the throttle body?

Does this happen when warm or from cold?

From Cold - Idle control valve
When warm - MAP sensor

When it's cold is when it's worse, but it's still not great when warm.

Could a mod change the title perhaps? It should say rough!

So, it's developed a new problem this morning. It was cold and damp overnight and this morning it started fine, but it very nearly stalled a couple of times when I was reversing it off the drive and the revs wouldn't settle at a nice idle.

Then once I was underway, it wouldn't let me accelerate. It would accelerate extremely slowly if I put a very small amount of throttle on. But any more throttle and it would misfire and judder and wouldn't go over 2,000 RPM.

Apologise for the terrible video and the fact that I was holding my phone whilst driving, but it was at a very slow speed and on a private road of course.

What do you think? I reckon the exhaust is blowing too, it's making a lot of noise.

Have you changed the idle control valve yet?

No mate, I've not had time to do anything yet. I'm just harvesting information before I crack on! I will probably look at it tomorrow evening.

Hang on, my car is a ph2 172 Cup with the electronic throttle body...will it have an idle control valve? I didn't think it did.

its not a dephaser issue is it?

They all run lumpy on idle. mine was reluctant to rev and would backfire on overrun. occasionally it would throw and engine light for 10-30 secs and when warm it was fine.

Called up a Renault specialist (Ren-Tech) and they advised it is probably a Dephaser pully messing with the timing. I bit the bullet and have just spent £1500.

Front wheel bearing, Timing Belt, Aux belts, Dephaser pulley, Water Pump, Miltek cat back exhaust, Lower timing belt cover (old one was broken),1 coil spring and both ball joints.

Ouch. Going to collect it this afternoon.

Don't know the car, but I think it will have. Other possibility is the throttle potentiometer.

If the EML has flashed, worthwhile getting the codes read.
