Took my 205 gti to my first rally sprint at the weekend. From the first stage it seemed to "die" on a fast corner but picked up again within a couple of seconds.Thought it was fuel surge problem so filled tank to three quarters full but made no difference. When it happens i can smell petrol fumes briefly in the cockpit.Anyone any ideas as to what to try next.

I still wouldn't rule out fuel starvation especially if it's a standard set-up. Other possibilities are crud in tank/partly blocked tank. Provided the mounts for the tank aren't too crusty it's not a bad job to drop it and have a look.

Mine does it on track at around 1/4tank on standard setup and gti6 engine, yoko ao48 and gaz coilovers.

Even on 1.4g corner its fine with more fuel in tank

So suspect you issue is something else

Any lights on the dash when this happens? Is there a loose wire from something in the engine bay making contact somewhere, causing the spark at the plugs to diminish and a temporary stall?
