i was thinking of upgrading the engine in a peugeot 204, if anybody knows or remembers that car. it's similar to a 304 and 305, pug's first FWD car ‐ unusual with a gearbox and diff right in the centre so the halfshafts are equal lengths. lightweight but pretty underpowered, i think it's only making about 40‐50hp.

i#d love to try and fit an XU engine out of a 205 or something, i don't need it to be stupidly fast. this would mean making a custom subframe to accomodate the new engine, and of course i'd have to use the 205 gearbox and diff ‐ meaning new halfshafts, possibly new steering to fit around the different engine? what else? suspension?

is this a reasonable build? what are your thoughs?

any advice appreciated.

No advice I'm afraid, but my first car was a maroon 204 Break so I'll be following your progress...

A 204 !!,now that brings back memories,I haven't seen one for years. My first thought is its a Peugeot classic, not many around in the UK,if its RHD even rarer. If the body is in good condition why mess with it? I know they will not pull the skin off a rice pudding but its an old classic so keep it original.
Fitting a XU engine and box I think would be out of the question? as it would mean a complete re-design of the front end.I just cant imagine how it would work??
The only option I can think of is to fit the same but more powerful lump?
Your 204 is probably a 1.1 XK4 engine,you have a choice of fitting a XL3S 1.3 twin carb engine from a 304S (72-76),XL5S 1.3twin carb 304SLS (76-78),XR5S 1.5 twin carb 305S (80-82).
To make this idea work you would need a complete donor car (if you can find one??) as there would be so many parts needed. It would not be a simple engine swop.
The best place for old Peugeot parts in the UK is www.peugeotparts.co.uk Have a word with Dean Hunter he may have everything you need,if he thinks the idea will work.

The other option would be add a small supercharger and EFI, that way you get a bit more power and it's still easily reverted back to standard - as already said, that's a rare car these days!
