Hi there, long time lurker of the forum but first post so here goes.

I'm on the hunt for a clio 197 and after a standard full fat spec.

There seems to be alot on offer and what looks like a buyers market, my question is how do they hold their mileage?

Alot of examples 60,000 + for around £4-£4.5k, are these a excellent bargain or a people getting rid of them for a reason? Also would you go for one? Or spend £6.5 for something with 25,000-35,000 miles.

Thanks

There is the 'BIG' service at 6 years old (possibly 5 on a 197?) or 72k miles. The service includes Aux belts and timing belts. People also get there water pump and dephasor pulley done at the same time. Costs vary from I believe £500 to over £1k. There are a number of independent specialists who will do this and a lot of owners prefer them to do the work over Renault.

i wouldn't worry about mileage too much you should really buy on condition, my 197 is an early 2006 model and has 92500 miles on it now. smile

With the addition of VVT it's the same design/block/engine etc. as the older cars way back to the 172's. Plenty of them have gone way over 100k.
I recall a chap with a 182 Trophy that did mega miles, something like over 250k.
Although then I also seem to recall that did end up eating itself, something a belt coming off of the engine.

They do need a bit more love than most cars of the same vintage though, stripping and cleaning the brakes once a year if used just on the road is a must.

Just bear in mind the cost of a replacement gearbox. Circa £2300 from Renault, and being out of warranty, I doubt RUK would contribute towards it.

Ah. What is the deal with that face? This isn't internet talk, it's first hand experience. The gearboxes are crap. Mine went at 39k, and I don't believe I'm the only one to have a replacement box. Coincidence? Don't think so.

No but it's been done to death on here already and still doesn't put people off wanting them. Though anyone who pays £2300 out of warranty for changing one would be a fool of the highest order, and Renault will often contribute towards costs if you ask nicely (or not nicely).

They would pay on, say, an 06 plate. I can't see they'd pay more than 50% on a car that old. 'Wear and tear' leaving a bill of over a grand.

This isn't saying don't buy one, it's a heads up and expect it to need replacing.

What plate was yours btw? Only ask as box problems seem uncommon among older cars.

Technobore would never admit that buying one would be a possibility for anyone sane biggrin

Same as my old one, it does seem the later ones are more susceptible.

It was simply a peice of advice incase the OP wasn't aware of the issue with the box. No one wants to be hit with a big bill, especially unexpectedly.

Thank for the heads up, of course it's a bit worrying why wouldn't it be. All cars have weak points just a shame it's such an expensive part of the car.

Still going to get one though.

I have a 172 on 100k. Admittedly I'm about to pay £500 for tie rod ends and rear brake refresh and it had the big £500 timing/aux/dephaser service not long before I got it but the engine and box are still strong.
idk about any issues on the newer ones but the 172 has brass synchros so you have to be sure to put the right gear box oil in, something about GL5 eating brass so you have to get GL4 but most gear oil these days you can't even tell which it is, certainly my local Renault dealer didn't have a clue.
They're not bomb proof cars but they're not that bad if they're properly looked after.
RS Clios are certainly worth going to the specialists for, they know their s**t.

Have a read up on the 197 front hub ball joins as these can need replacing.

Other than that I wouldn't worry. A gearbox rebuild will probably be around 2-300 from agency so not exactly going to break the bank.
