Been logging it on my phone since buying the car a few weeks ago and the most I have seen is 31mpg which was mostly motorway and knocking around, on weeks where all I have done is gone to work in have struggle to get into the 20's!

Bit of googling suggests this may or may not be normal so figured I'd ask the PH faithful.

I've run a tidy original 1.9 for nearly two years and it works out at 27 going steady or 25ish driving it hard. I think you've done well getting into the 30^s with yours! Good effort!

best i've got is 42mpg. easy get 36mpg running super-unleaded

bare in mind i am fanatical about making sure my cars are always in tip top codition. from regular servicing with genuine parts, to checking tyre pressures.

common problem with xu 205s is the sensor which controls cold starting

I get 31mpg consistently with my standard 1.6, always run on 97+ octane fuel.
Motorway driving isn't as economical as you might imagine in the 1.6 as it has such low gearing meaning there is little difference between town and motorway use.

Is it best for the engine to run it on the pricier juice then?

I am also fanatical about making my cars run superb. Replaced all the electrical components, fluid and even had the cambelt re changed just so I knew my garage that I trusted had done the work.

The engine is high mileage at 171,000 however it runs a dream.

These cars were set up to run on 98 octane, a lot have had the timing reset so it can run on 95.
I think I used to run my old 8v on 'Super' but back then it was 66p a litre!

Your ECU temp sensor sounds like it's knackered and the recent cold weather has highlighted this - basically it's telling the ECU it's always cold and just chucking in loads of fuel.
10 minute fix and about £15.

I can get mine down to about 15mpg!

I'm keeping an eye on it and see if the sensor needs changing.
