Cliosport.net will be your friend for this. But in summary, some things will be Cambelt every 5 years. Advised to do aux belt, water pump and Dephaser pulley at 10 years also, knocking from top mounts, cured by a washer. Engine mounts can wear and cause gearbox to knock or feel clunking of engine moving under accel/ deceleration.
There's plenty more but being French, you'd expect nothing less.
Oh, and the smiles last a long time.

As its a Cup (no ABS) keep an eye out for frontal damage. It should have a couple of big stickers on the slam panel, a thin black splitter under the front bumper and two little black 'nostrils' on the bumper - any of those missing probably means its been front ended at some point.

Steering wheels melt - its standard and the gearboxes can be weak. Listen for a whining from the ns front which goes away if you dip the clutch.

But, for the money, they are superb. I had one for 8 years and still miss it.

Also check in the boot (for dents etc) under the matts for damage as they're easily written off.

Great fun cars, I love mine

3rd gear syncro - do a fast change from 2nd to 3rd @ high revs. Check for vibration/knocking from driveshafts. £250 each from renault new, sourcing decent/correct 2nd hand ones is a bit of a mare.

Watch the brakes in the wet, my cup locks the passenger side front wheel all too easily in the wet. The driving gods on cliosport.net don't have a problem with this obviously. I want abs!!!

fitting a cat on a 182 is a piece of piss, you should get one on ebay cheap enough. Fitting a 172 cat is a pita.

Belts. Belts should be done every 72k or 5 years. It should be done by a reputable specialist or Renault. It's not the easiest belt change to do and if the timing is out you can end up needing a new engine.

Under the boot carpet check for any creases, they buckle with very light impacts to the rear.

Front bumper, some splitters were never fitted by the dealership but if the front end has had a respray then there will more than likely be 2 stickers missing from the front bumper which go in the vented section under the top grill. If they are solid black or missing then they are incorrect, they should be textured slightly.

Gearboxes aren't that "weak" but they are slack, this can be helped with a polybush dogbone mount or even a Yanoo stiff shift kit.

Steeringwheels always melt and the thumb grips fall apart, that's just normal.

Check for airbag lights on the dash, on a cup model this shouldn't be a big deal as there aren't any in the seats but on non cup models the airbags can go off in slight bumps BUT there is also the common fault that the wires under the passenger seat are loose.

Get yourself over to cliosport.net and read, there are tonnes of buying guides etc.

Well- I've bought it, full history, very nice paint work in the same blue as the cup. Mint inside, no accident damage, full history, 77k, belts changed all for 2200. Hopefully it.l be a nice car. Would just like to change the exhaust for a standard one as its currently a bit loud although not ott- happy days!

There's a slight difference between the Cup (Mondial) and the 182 (Arctic) blues. Very similar though.

Seriously though, get signed up on cliosport. I'm still a member there and didn't own a clio for 2 years until recently again.

Great forum and great advice, well worth the membership fees each year.

Nice. I do love a good iceberg clio. It looks like a completely different colour on a Ph1 172 though. Mental.

CS name or aren't you on there?

Not on there although I know a few people who are.

Met a lot of people on there through my sprint day organising though. Just to show how good clios are I've got a little leaderboard.

Class 4 - Up to 2 litre:
1: Chris H - Clio 200 - 1'30.3
2: Matt – 172 Cup – 1’31.6
3: Tom Cash – Clio 200 – 1’31.7
4: Paul H - Mazda MX5 - 1'31.7
5: Tom N – Mazda MX5 – 1’33.0
6: Dan - Clio 172 - 1'33.1
7: Luke – Toyota MR2 - 1'33.2
8: Dave – Clio 172 - 1'33.4
9: Mike – Clio 172 - 1'33.6
10: Mike D - Clio 197 - 1'34.2
11: iAndy – Clio 200 - 1'34.8
12: Raymond - S2000- 1'35.0

Both of the MX5s were highly modified, the rest of the cars pretty much standard. Certainly the best car for the money, and the 182s we've had have been noticeably slower!
