After months of deliberation climbed off the fence and bought an 08 Megane 230 F1 R26 as ‘family friendly’ replacement for my 944 Lux (but will keep the £620 Punto stop-gap – it’s too brilliant as a local runabout).

22,000 on the clock, full service history, one owner - under £8k but I had the cambelt changed straight off due to age rather than mileage.

Love the engine, the looks, the interior space and the push button start. Hate the starship handbrake lever and the nooks and crannies under the bonnet that trap bits of dead leaf. Suspension over-firm for my style of driving but otherwise very happy. Probably (OK, certainly) didn’t really need the F1 but should hold its value relatively well.

So far so good and toddler loves it!

If you haven't already, get the parcel shelf and sound deadening out of the boot, put the back seats flat, and give it some beans, somewhat immature, but what a noise, almost unique jet engine sound from the exhaust, fabulously addictive, enjoy.

Group buys from owners forums for stuff from RS Tuning can be about £300.

RSTuner from fastchip and Henk in Holland. About £300 depending on what spec.

Superchips £320.

This!! It reveals an entirely different character of he car that remains hidden most of the time. Personally I loved the increase in volume of the turbo whistle with the seats down which also allow you to hold it at low revs with the turbo whistle gently in the background before progressing to full throttle and changing the noise to the "jet" type noise. I barely ever put the seats up in mine and actually find it frustrating to have rear seat passengers as a result. Hope you enjoy also.

Had my R26 about 6 months now and I'm really enjoying it. I'm the same as the OP in that a normal 225 would have probably suited my driving more but I can't resist the 'hardcore' model of any car. I think they're a bit of a performance bargain, gave £6,000 for mine with 42k and good history. Not sure I'm driving it right as it's currently averaging 33mpg.

Unless you drive in stop start traffic a lot and floor it at every opportunity it should do better than 23mpg. Probably worth getting it checked.

I'm getting at least 30, but with practically no town driving or short trips (got the Punto for that!).

My wife's sedate driving habits will see 33mpg. When I get the car at the weekend it plummets very quickly.

I pciked mine up on New Year's eve! Almost indentical to OP's smile I'm getting 25 but my commute is a 15mile round trip so a lot of stop start short journeys. Still haven't got round to dropping the back seats yet!

Neither have I, but then I do have a childseat in the back!

One thing I hadn't expected was what a superb motorway car it is.

Back seats down as well you say...? scratchchin

ETA I can confirm this works very well in a 265, as well as removing the boot floor biglaughbiglaughbiglaughbiglaughbiglaugh
