Citroen C3, 1400 Petrol, ('59), high oil consumption?

As above. Girlfriends car, owned for 5 months or so. 59 plate, 28000ish miles, Petrol.
No abnormal use. No smoke on startup, not seen any while driving.
Seems to be using oil, topped it up last month, now the check oil is flashing.
Problem is compounded by the dipstick being a very crappy design so its hard to judge the level.
Are they known for it? Any ideas as to causes?
