Does anyone use a 205Gti for track days?
Discussion
I'm thinking about getting something simpler for track days as I ponder paying for a new engine for my stylus after I blew it up a couple of months ago and it's not going to be ready for another week or so and then I'm on holiday... sigh.
Anyway, I've had 2 205Gtis in the past... a 1.9 and a 1.6 and I fancy an Mi-16 or a GTi-6 engined caged version for track days. Does anyone run a 205 like this one track? If so is it good fun, what sort of experience does it give and do you find the lack of power frustrating or is it so amazing in corners that it doesn't matter?
Any info would be gratefully received.
Thanks,
Mark

I've seen a standard 1.6gti hound much more capable machinery to the sheer dismay of their owners.
Mi16 suffers from oil surge although when I used to do track days I never had an issue.
I've read about some of the oil surge issues since posting my question. Any idea why you didn't suffer the same problem and would you go for the gti-6 engine instead if you could do it all again?I've seen a standard 1.6gti hound much more capable machinery to the sheer dismay of their owners.

I believe most mi16 s are of an age where they need at least £1000 rebuild on top of donor and conversion costs....this is according to Miles who does more of these conversions than most.
The gti 6 would be a good track engine as it loves to rev.
Have a look on the forums as there are loads of track day 205s and should be easy to pic up one with some nice bits already done, just watch out for poor conversions as they can include tilted engines, tapping top ends from over revs and poor wiring

I've got a Skip Brown 1.9 GTI-S running twin carbs, Quaife LSD, SB phase 1 and 2 suspension, 1.6 Gearbox with shortshift and a few other goodies, and on the right track surprisingly theres not that much that gets past.
Probably wouldn't be that much fun on Silverstone GP circuit though I guess

I can sell you a very good track ready supercharged 205 gti with the gti6 engine.
If you are interested obviously get in touch, done many track days in it and its a hoot.
Even my daughter loves it-

Sorry all, I didn't see any of your updates until just now.
Thanks very much for the advice. Sadly my current track car's engine rebuild story isn't yet complete and while it's all up and running and past the mot I now have to do 1000 miles to run it in before it can be remapped. It's not really a very comfortable road car so feck knows when I'm going to be able to do that
Anyway, in short, I have to put off replacing it until next spring at which time I'll be looking at 205s again. Shame as that supercharged car looks superb.
All the best,
Mark
