Has anyone changed a starter motor on a Trafic,,,,,?,,,,,,,,

I am the proud owner of a 53 reg renault trafic DCI100. Its been reliable up to now!

The starter motor has failed and I misguidedly decided to change it myself. I have worked on vehicles for over 35 years and never have I experienced such a bas---d job. Has anyone on here tackled his job?
and succeeded. Decorating the hall through the letterbox would be easier, has anyone any advice? Bar selling the thing!!.

bit of a pig as on the rear of the engine,try from under the van may be easier,remove airbox and turbo pipe for more room
